I only have one key and fob for my 2012. I've tried 3 different hardware stores and all 3 were unable to program the new keys. Are there any tricks to getting these keys programed?

I had this very same issue for the fob on my 2007. I ordered my Fob off of a website recommended by my local locksmith, and that locksmith wasn’t able to program it (These guys have done very good work on other cars for me). They were easily able to make a key btw. One thing that the locksmith mentioned was that I had to have the master key in order to make a copy of the key. I had shown up with a copy the first time I came in, and they couldn’t use that to make a copy.

If the key is your issue, perhaps yours is a copy?

The solution for the Fob for me was going to Batteries Plus. I think it cost $150 for the Fob and programming, but they got it done in no time flat.

I will never understand why so many times when I buy a used car, it only comes with 1 key.

my '07 came with one keywhen i bought it four years ago. that's it. i've checked the VIN and the original specs said it came with remote keyless entry, but i haven't gotten around to getting fobs or keys made. i had a spare made that i hide under the wheel well, but that's it. that won't even start the truck.

Batteries Plus will be able to get your key fob made if you want it. Though I get if you don’t want to bother with it. If you’re an old guy like me you’re not a stranger to just using the key to unlock the door lol. “That’s the way it was and we liked it” lmao

Absolutely this. Buy a fob from Amazon (be sure to get the right code) and use TechStream to program the transceiver. Get any locksmith to cut the physical key.

yea i had keys-only trucks until 2011 and i do like this creature comfort, especially with a wife & kids. also my key core is worn the fuck out and when i'm trying to lock it i feel like ace ventura when he jingles his keys to warn his jungle friends to hide. need to replace that, too. i'd love to have a fob for it.

I must have a copy of the original key because they cut a new one and it won't take the program. I do have a fob that works so maybe I'll just have another fob made and leave the key in the truck so I won't lose it.
