Ok, I bought my 2015 TRD 5.7 brand new, off the lot on January 31, 2014 at 7:30pm. Needless to say, I love my truck! There are two things I don't love about it: 14.2 mpg no matter what (highway, city...) I get it, it's a heavy truck, mileage is what it is... The REAL reason for this thread, is the following: I was told that my gas tank was a 18 gallon tank, and for the life of me, I can't remember where I heard that. When I fill-up, (when the gas light is on) I can only fill the tank to 18 gallons, or thereabouts. Yesterday, while at the dealer looking at a new Land Cruiser, the salesman told me that I was nuts, that there was no-way I only had a 18 gallon tank (oh, btw, I have 300,000k miles on it with no issues. Changed the plugs and distributors 3 times, and oil changes every 5k miles) anyway, the guy (who was in the service dept for 19 years, now in sales) told me that my tank is either 26, or 32 gallons. He told me that there's a way to determine or "reset" the gauge to reflect proper amount of fuel I have. I'm sick of having to fill my truck 3x a week! Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. How can you tell without driving until I run out of gas how big the tank is, if it's not 18 gallons.

No such thing as an 18 gallon tank for these trucks. You have a 26 gallon tank. Fuel light comes on with 6-8 gallons left in the tank. This is reserve to keep the fuel pump covered as to prevent it from over heating. And if you don’t reset your avg fuel mileage, it’s never going to change. It’s an average. Not what you’re actually getting.

I appreciate your response, and yes; I’ve reset my “average mpg” multiple times. My problem is: when my fuel light is on, and indicates 10 miles left or so, the maximum amount of gas I can put in is 18 gallons, not 26. I WISH I could pump 26 gallons, I wouldn’t have to stop and fill up as often. What tells me how big my tank is, is how much I can put in, when the gauge is on “e”

You need to be brave and drive until it shuts off...than you know how far you can drive when it says "zero miles left." It's a nuance of 2015 and older...you can upgrade to an OEM 38gallon tank setup, still boasting 6-8gallons of reserve or move up to a Transferflow 46gallon or a Titan tank...heavier with fuel generally means less carrying capacity...pros & cons list time...

Thank you for this info- what’s involved with “upgrading” to an OEM 38 gallon tank setup? If I have a 26, or 38 gallon tank, are you talking about resetting the gauge so it reflects the proper amount of fuel in the tank?

The most I've put in mine is 21 gallons and the gauge was on the left side of empty..

    14.2 MPG...
Be grateful, I'm lucky to get 13..:eek2:

    This is from your manual.
So 4 gallons with your 14.2 MPG is 56.8 miles until empty, not 10 miles

Also, I've read it isn't good to run it dry.
Something about keeping the fuel pump submerged and lubricated.
Not sure how valid that is..

Also, there's no 32 gallon. Just 26 or 38 gallon.

There's a sticky thread on here about 38 gallon experiences where people talk about how many gallons are useable. That might have been where the confusion was with you being told you had an 18 gallon tank. 18 gallons of fuel at fill up from "empty"

For what it's worth.....the fuel pump is cooled by gas flowing through it. As long as gas can flow through it, the pump won't overheat. I've owned an 07 and a 14. Just sayin.

Resetting anything will not increase the size of your tank. Only buying a new tank will do that. You have to decide if it is worth the time and money to do it.

I have a 46 gallon tank from LRA. Your distance to empty will not be correct, but your gas gage will be. My truck came with the 26 gallon tank and still reads the DTE as if it was the 26 gal tank still.
