    Tundra community -

I am considering buying a 2014 Tundra Limited Crew Max 4x4, that I found on Facebook Marketplace. The Vehicle has 203K miles, and drove fine. The seller is asking $15K, which by my research seems like a great deal.

Carfax came back clean, and regular service updates.

However, vehicle spent much of its life in the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and the undercarriage had quite a bit of surface rust, as well as any bare metal components in the engine bay. All of the surface rust I found under the car was the flaky light rust, that seemed like it could be easily removed and sealed. I live in Memphis - pretty rust free climate.

The Truck also needs some minor body work on some dents, and maybe a new rear bumper.

Does this seem like a good buy?

Transmission fluid was flushed regularly? Diffs/transfer case? Spark plugs? Water pump? Is there any oil leaking from the cam towers?

they’re good motors and good trucks; that seems like a pretty good deal if you’re comfortable buying a truck with 200k. If the rust is all just surface rust definitely either coat it yourself after cleaning or bring it some place and have them coat it and clean it

What are you going to use it for? Occasionally driver, driving across county, state or the entire country. Tow occasionally and short distances? Or tow a camper across the Rocky Mountains?

a 200k 11 yr old vehicle comes with risk. The risk can be managed for o
How you intend to use it.

My 170k 07 is fine for what I use it for 90% of the time. Short trips towing a boat, hauling firewood, etc. But I'm not taking it across country without pause and liekly some work to help bulletproof some things. I just bought a certified 2020 to do those kinds of trips.

check for valve cover and tower leaks. Also brake lines. Starter replaced? Bearing hubs and sensors? Radiator/wp?

At 200k its due for another belt and waterpump if it hasn't already been done, factor that in.

Mileage isn't really a concern if the maintenance is good and up to date.

Only if it has a 4.7 V-8, no need on the 5.7.

The 5.7 is chain, only needs to be done once it’s starting to get slack

Worth noting. In the year 2016 there were a LOT of floods in Texas and Florida. A lot of vehicles got flooded, were paid out in insurance claims and then found their way back into the market.

The region of Mississippi Gulf Coast itself would not promote rust.
