Converting aftermarket CAI to OEM

There's a 1GT for sale I'm looking at that has an Airaid CAI assembly, and that won't fly here in CA, and from what I've read the OEM CAI is the best option anyway.

Besides switching out the assembly, do the aftermarket units use less vacuum lines or any other issues I should consider?

 

There's been a deep dive on airaid CAIs lately.

All vacuum lines that go to the Airaid unit, if set up correctly, will go to the stock air system.

You'll have the valve cover breather going into the largest port on the baffle, and then the two that are barb fitting'd (I'm assuming) into 1 will go into their own respective ports. Fuel rail on the back, PS pump on the side.

Note that you CAN use the stock air box and filter and use an just use the Airaid tube. You will need a 3.5" diameter by 3" long hump hose to connect the box to the tube. This would basically create an Airaid Jr kit.

Edit. All of this assumes a common Airaid kit. If you can take a photo or specify the kit number yourself, we can possibly verify

If you plug in a 2006 Tundra SR5 dbl cab 4X4 V8 into the Airaid website it says they don't even make a product for that vehicle, but it does list one CAI assembly for a 2004 with the same specs.

 

Their website is all messed up.

It's probably similar to airaid 510-173? You should be able to find schematics based on that. The 510 can change based on filter media, but other components are the same. Stock air box ones are variations on 511-781

 

Don't throw away the intake tube portion, or the rubbers on either end, I know someone here on the forum who'd love to take it off your hands. The tube itself has become unobtanium.

You mean the OEM assembly? or the Airaid gear? This 1GT has the Airaid gear on it and I'll have to convert it back to OEM to pass smog in CA.

 

The Airraid gear. They've apparently discontinued the intake tube Airaid sells, and it has a more favorable setup for the MAF than the K&N option. K&N has bought out Airraid and Spectre, and seems to be spinning down all of their older products.

The Airraid intake tube itself is nice, if you have the one that doesn't have a MAF mounting point, because with the right adapters, you can keep the OEM intake and have a less cluttery intake tube to draw air from the stock airbox to the intake.

Edit: the instructions show the CAI is only CARB compliant on 2000-2002 Tundras.

I get my 57-9027 K&N kit tomorrow. I could send you my stock 2006 intake pipe, but that doesn't help with the missing OE airbox.

 

I doubt an inspection station is going to know that. I'm sure they see plenty of the K&N kits, and if it has the K&N sticker and their CARB sticker, they'd probably wave it along...

 

I mention that because the CARB Compliant sticker request form asks for a copy of the vehicle registration and picture of the VIN as part of the required info.

May not be able to even get a sticker if K&N/Airaid didn't make a CARB kosher CAI for the year of the truck. OP didn't say the year Tundra he was looking at.

 

I was looking at a 2006 dbl cab SR5 4X4 up in OR, no rust, 104K on the odometer, all stock with the exception of wheels, tires and the CAI. It doesn't matter bc someone from the midwest bought it site unseen.

The search continues.... if anyone has any good leads I have cash ready to go and would love a shot an 04-06 4X4, preferably AC, but I'm honestly open to anything with a good maintenance history, no cancer, non-smoker vehicle, cloth interior with less than 125K miles on it.

Fair enough. If I were to look for a replacement for mine today, 150ish would be my target mileage. I would consider higher, maybe up to 200k

I’ve driven mine 178k miles in 20 years. It sits at 278k now. So it would take me almost 20 years to get one back to that mileage from 150 or so at my current rate. I do not plan to ever get rid of mine, but I’ve already thought about the unplanned uncoupling that could occur against my wishes due to the actions of others.

 

This will not be my DD, so my mileage will be around 10K/ year, mostly. Good food for thought. I'll cast a wider net.
