Where to buy alternator?

you can probably find a junkyard one out of a sequoia and then rebuild it.


Or try and pry mine from my cold, dead trucks body

 

I put a remanufactured one from Autozone on my truck. Was a rebuilt Denso unit, had the factory stampings on it and everything. Don't know how it will hold up long term though...

 

Denso rebuilt should be gucci, but keep us updated. It's nice to have more info on what to buy and what to stay away from.

 

How much is involved in rebuilding one?

heck, you'd probably get a few years out of the junkyard alternator before you had to rebuild it

 

Every time I bought a remanufactured alternator, it lasted longer than the factory.

now our tundra denso's are better quality than those other factory ones, but still very likely to get at least for respectable longevity out of it

I expect it to hold up. I only drive 8k miles a year (and that's between 2 vehicles), so I expect this alternator to hold up (for me, anyway).

It had all the factory Denso stampings as the original alternator I took out, just the Toyota sticker was removed and some orange Autozone paint was on it... Not saying Autozone used the same bearings and bushings that Denso uses, just saying my alternator was originally built by Denso.

 

Goddamnit, I'm in the tax and title office waiting room and just burst out laughing after reading this.

 

it really isn't much. Few nuts and bolts, splitting the case and swapping out brushes. You may even have a shop around town capable of doing it for you on the cheap. Even upgrading internals ect.....my dad's AC shop was right across the street from a place called Triple R. They specialized in rebuilding starters, alternators and something else. Can't remember. Lol

but we would get alternators rebuilt for like $100

 

Funny. But seriously, I normally go the opposite direction - I've been replacing parts on mine before they go bad. On the flipside, alternators are one of the easier things to replace

that's also why I asked what was involved. I've never rebuilt one.

I hear ya. What about the starter? I wonder what other parts might not be produced soon.

 

Starters pretty easy to rebuild as well.
Power steering pump maybe?
AC compressors are another rebuild

 

My point being; why wouldn’t you just rebuild it before you put it on the truck in the first place. Then it’s a non worry for many years instead of two

 

That's what I was awkwardly trying to say. That normally I would go new or rebuild even if I knew the other One was in good shape

 

My dad specialized in rebuilding AC compressors. I hate myself for not taking that part more seriously, but instead, spent all my time being a monkey wrench.

it's not super hard from what I remember. But what I don't remember is what he did with the internals. Kind of important. So yea, fuck me.

 

Was just on rock auto for some other things and they had the 130a denso alt. It was the only one though, They haven’t had one in months.

I ordered a 150A recently, and they came back to say it was an inventory error later.

 

I just had good luck getting a Denso (reman) alternator at NAPA (for the daughter's 2009 Venza). Just about $300 (not counting the core charge).

 

I was looking for a Denso rebuilt for my Land Cruiser, but of course there were none to be found. Remarkably the dealer had a Toyota rebuilt (-84) available for a reasonable price (in today’s crazy marketplace). Thankfully it turned out I didn’t need it (bad tensioner pulley, he said parenthetically).

I believe there's stock periodically.

I think I just wasn't fast enough. I ordered it within 30mins of getting the alert, I think inventory was limited, and others beat me to it.

But I wanted the 150A Sequoia alternator (bolt-on upgrade)

 

I’m assuming the 100 Amp is the default for a 2006 SR5? I couldn’t find a year/trim specific guide and of course, my sticker on the current is mostly torn FML

 

Depends on whether you have the tow package, I believe.

Get under your truck and look at the sticker on your current alternator. That will tell you what you have. Otherwise, if your bumper has the OEM 7-pin tow plug, you should have the 130A. Unless that's the sticker that's torn?

I had the 100A in mine after the 130A burned up. I saw some weird stuff.

 

Good looking out. It’s 7-pin so the alternator “should” be a 130. Makes sense. Truck has 197k and I’m 99% sure the alternator is original. Thinking about stocking one for the inevitable. I only put about 7k a year on it so I’m not sure if a PM of replacing the current one in the truck makes sense.

 

My factory unit caught fire at around 65k original miles. Fun times.

But yeah, I gotta be honest, if Denso stops making one, and Toyota NLA's theirs, my fallback will be Bosch from a legitimate source (i.e. not scAmazon/fleaBay/Temu/AliBaba/other counterfeit sources).

 

I’m with you which is why I bought it. I’ve only put 10k on mine in 2.5 years and it’s been to Florida 3 times from Maryland and back.

 

Another way to confirm is the ALT fuse in engine bay....120A(100A alternator) w/o tow pkg....140A(130A alternator) with tow pkg
