I wash my truck and cars. Once a year, usually in the spring, clay bar. Then I use the Griots Ceramic All-in-One Wax (not the spray).

I have never done chemical decontamination. What does it add? What does it remove that the clay bar does not?

What brands work well and do not harm the finish?

It is different from clay bar or mitt.

Griots has iron/fallout remover. It removes the rail dust and other contaminants. Spray it on, let it sit some, agitate and rinse. Then you would follow up with clay/mitt and the usual wax/polish.

Griots has videos of all the steps, easy but takes some time.

Frichco gave you some great info. There are tons of iron fallout removers out there.....pretty much every brand has one.....biggest key is not allowing it to dry completely on the surface. Word of caution....it smells like skunk piss

I’ve never had the pleasure of smelling skunk piss . But I get your meaning.

One final question, if I use an “iron fallout remover”, what does it do for the finish? Brighter? Glossier?

Just removes contamination that usually embeds itself into the paint surface. Clay bar may get some of it, but it basically melts it away by dissolving it so you can rinse it off.

Rail dust or metal particles from brakes can be warm when it attaches to your vehicle and it causes it to stick into the surface.
