So I’m out of town on a fishing trip and my truck went into 4H on its own and will not come out of it. I called several dealerships but they were all closed or full until next week. I’m 2 1/2 hrs from home and not sure what to do at the moment. Anyone had this happen? To be really clear, no I did not accidentally engage it. It’s currently in 2H on the knob. I never touched it

    Thanks,
    Bruce

I'm assuming it's actually in 4 hi and not an indication issue. Try a disco on battery and see if the reset fixes it.

Also try a circle right, then left with a little straight in the middle with bumping the gas on and off . Then do the same in reverse

So between the hokey pokey and a battery reset:
    did it work?

Battery didn’t work. The Hokey Pokey was a little too much for me to try

Will it go to 4Lo? Then back to 4Hi, then 2Hi.

This is the first thing I would try. Hopefully, it resets itself. Record everything for your dealer to see because, of course, they won't be able to recreate it!

That’s a tough spot. Do you gently drive home, making wide sweeping turns and hope you don’t cause any undue wear/damage up front or call for a flatbed ride to your local dealership, to be cautious, and fork out a lot of cash? Unless you’ve got a buddy in the business or access to a car hauler, 2.5hr flatbed ride will be $$$!

Faulty switch, actuator, or a wiring problem are my guesses.

On my 2nd gen with the truck not running and ignition switch on you can hear the actuator driving ... perhaps fuse in
Four-wheel drive control system? still odd that it auto transfered to 4Hi without command.

I had this happen on a Jeep once. Just dropped out the short front driveshaft and drove home. Only 8 bolts. Easy. I’d have to roll under this Tundra to see if that’s easily Do-able. (Still have to keep the speed down as the xfer case is still engaged)

I believe the manual says you can shift in and out of 4H up to 60 mph. You should be fine driving it home in 4H at reasonable speeds.

You can drive in 4Hi at greater speeds than the safe shift speed (60mph). Just don’t try to shift into or out of 4Hi above 60mph.

Well it’s at the dealer. They could not get it out of 4WD. They were told by Toyota to start by replacing the switch. Acting like they don’t know if it will be covered under warranty (I have a 8yr/125K platinum). Not sure how it wouldn’t be covered. I am out of original factory warranty (40k miles on the truck)
