This fiasco gets worse every day. My 6/23 build is just outside the recall range.

Not too happy about having this on the back of my mind when I load up the family for a 4500 mile round trip to Florida in May, with 21K on the odometer.

Oh well, not sure there's a better alternative. But I've never had to worry about a 1-1/2 year old truck catastrophically breaking done before.

Sign of the times, I guess.

Ya fuck, I feel for you. I haven’t pulled the trigger but I’m just trying to figure out what type of mess I’m getting myself into while also trying to take everything with a grain of salt. 219,000 trucks sold across 2022-2023 and I don’t know how many failures there are but every one I hear makes me cringe. On the flip side, I have seen several reports of some of these making it past the 100k mile mark and most recently one surpassing 200k miles...so there is hope, maybe?

Is it just a lot of noise? Is it a very serious issue? Hard to say but I agree that having it in the back of your mind when loading the family up isn’t an ideal scenario. I personally just don’t see any other comparable trucks that I’m interested in, I’ve been a Toyota guy through and through but my Taco is too small for my family, and as much as I loved my 4R’s, their Toyota tax seems to extremely high right now in anticipation of the 6th gen, and feel like a slug after driving a 3rd gen Tundra.

I really like my 24 model with an 8/23 build date, but news of continued failures throughout the 24 model year does weigh on my mind as I head out on a long trip in a sparsely populated area. As humorous as it may sound to some, if the information regarding failures in this thread are true, the problems with the V35A-FTS engines in the Tundra are beginning to sound more and more like design or manufacturing material issues.

If I were you I would not buy one because you may be stuck thinking about what could happen. It’s no way to enjoy your vehicle and road trips. Buy a used 2nd gen or even better a suv. Better for the kiddos and family imo

If replacement engine assemblies started being built in August 2024 and the issues weren’t resolved until November 2024 sometime, it’s plausible the failed replacements were from the early batches prior to issues being fixed?

Paralysis by analysis for me here, 100%. Ignorance is bliss and I wish my curiosity never got the best of me.

With that being said, reasonable logic from @ElJefe77 giving some hope

If buying new, get the extended warranty.

If buying used, maybe stick to trucks from within the recall window. That way if it spins a bearing, you get the long block. Failures outside the recall window are still getting short blocks.

I'd be extremely bummed if I had a '24 or '25 that failed and had to get a short block under warranty.

I tried to think about if I was in the market now vs 2 years ago and I’m not 100% sure I’d take the leap knowing what I know now. I guess thankfully? I’m in the recall window.

I wouldn’t have spent this kind of money on any other comparable truck as my mind was set on the Tundra. Good luck with your decision.

Honestly, I have no clue WTF the inside joke is about Ryan. I do know the guy that banned on here and took time off. I know him on social media. He doesn’t get on forums that often as far as I know.

The inside joke is there is another person on this forum that some believe is Ryan even though he's been banned.

Anyways, just saw a YouTube video Ryan posted about 5 hours ago if anyone is interested in it.

This is one of the most rational takes that I’ve seen from a 3rd gen owner on this forum.

Curious as to what moved you out of the ‘21 Pro and why you wouldn’t go back to a low miles ‘20 or ‘21. If they are well maintained and even have a 100k miles on the clock, they are likely to outlive any other half ton manufactures since.

My take is the opposite. The 2020 Sr5 trd off-road 4x4 that I had was underwhelming. This new powertrain, especially the iForce max, spanks the 5.7 in terms of performance. The quality on my 2025 seems better than the 2020 I had. I wouldn’t go back to the 5.7 at all after being in this powertrain. You can tell that it’s more geared for truck duty and makes more power lower down than the 5.7.

Is it rational because you agree? So the numerous posters on here that disagree with your take is irrational then by definition? Just because your opinion is different doesn’t make someone else’s irrational. This mentality is why the world is going to shit!

What do you mean by “underwhelming” and “spanks the 5.7 in terms in performance”?

If you mean acceleration and pulling power off the line or passing speed, yeah sure, but how much does that matter?

I tow 7500lbs travel trailer on highways in rural areas and every major city in the US. Never had trouble getting up to speed, blending into traffic, or when I want to pass someone.

If accelerating and pulling off the line were my thing, I’d get an S/C and switch to 5.3 rear end. I’d still be more reliable than the 3rd gen and “spank it in performance”.

But I don’t use my hammer drill to run wood screws either.

C'mon man, everyone knows 2nd Gen owners are the only rational people on this forum.

They're not just a pretty face and a great head of hair, they're also smarter than you. Just ask them. They're here to teach us about trucks, and how to win at life in general.

We should be grateful for their interest in our little forum.

Dude, less caffeine. When you say the “world”, i think you really mean society. And it’s only getting better.

His thought is rational because he recognizes a problem and is looking for a way out. Whether you agree or not, that is rational.

Your posts are perfect examples of irrational thought. Several of your posts express concern about the way Toyota has handled this problem. At the same time you continue to ague/challenge others that express concern.

I can agree with this, if his rational point is pointed to everyone. If he were referring to his own thoughts, it would be fine as we all have our opinion for our own purpose.

I started out wanting a Tundra and was looking at 5.7 trucks, not knowing about the new V6TT power train at all. When visiting my local dealership to see what they had in their used inventory, they didn't have anything to my suiting. They brought out this 2022 Limited for me to test drive. They told me some specs on it and convinced me to test drive it, although it was more than I was looking to spend. I was WOWED by it, by the power, the feel, the features it had. I only didn't like the space behind the seat to the rear seat, it was a double cab vs crewmax, and the entry/exit comfort was set to full back. I was told that can be changed in settings. We went in and talked about prices, which was so so in my opinion. They had what I felt was a fair price according to the KBB value. Our talks ended with the maximum I would ever allow myself to spend, and that was not intended to be an offer as it was several thousand below what they priced it to me at. I shook their hand and walked out. While taking a couple pictures to show my wife later, another man walked out and asked if I was willing to close the deal if they came down to the price I had said. I had to process everything as I was not offering that price for that truck, just stating the max I would spend period. I felt it was a deal that I should take and purchased it on the spot, while finding out during the paperwork about the motor problems. I was assured by the team that Toyota was taking care of everything, of which I know Toyota is a solid truck manufacturer. I don't look back with any regret and love my 22 Limited, it's what I was looking for and more.

Mind you, that day, I drove to the lot in my 95.5 Tacoma (OG) after just putting new Toyo 31X10.50's on it with the old tires and rims in the bed. This Tacoma has 192K on the odometer and purrs like a kitten. A March of 95 build (1 month into the build of Tacomas), V6 and 5 speed truck.

See the comments to @FrankG about irrational thought, they apply to your posts as well.

I get it. Bud I paid a guy a compliment as being rational, and asked a direct, simple question to him. I didn’t indict anyone else. I am sorry you keyboard warriors are so sensitive, life must be very tough for you.

I think it’s rational because the primary purpose of a tool that you purchase is for it to do its job as long as possible, not for it to make you feel a certain way while you use it.

I truly do not care how it feels in terms of performance. I do not put value on being wowed by the driving experience of a truck. That alone apparently makes me a minority customer in the truck market. There is not a single load I would pull with a 3rd gen that I wouldn’t also pull with a 2nd gen. For the payload ratings they give both trucks, power was never the issue with the 5.7.

Will it go a bit slower up hills with a trailer? Sure. But all indicators at this point show it will do so for a longer lifespan. This is why used 2nd gen trucks still command a high resale value even though they average 13-15mpg. Lots of potential use left in the tool.

P.S. Before anyone calls me a hater, I am a Toyota fan—I want to see the same longevity under hard use out of the 3rd gens that we see with the earlier trucks. There are even a few high mileage 3rd gens, which gives me hope.

P.P.S. Someone mentioned 3UR valve springs earlier. The valve spring issue in the 3UR trucks was and is a very rare issue. So rare in fact, when Toyota recalled 138,000 2008-2010 vehicles for valve spring failure, the 3UR Tundras weren’t among them.
