My drivers side door rattles like crazy over bumps. Is there an easy fix?

The "open door" cab light comes on during hard right turns from me leaning against the door as well. Clearly something is broken/worn out but Im not sure what part exactly. Anyone have any experience fixing this?

 

Try loosening and adjusting the bolts on the U-clamp inward in the door jamb to see if you can move it to get a better seal. Good luck.

 

Are the rubber door stops still in place

 

Yes those are still there and look fine.

Everything is tightened as far as bolts and there doesnt seem to be any way to adjust anything.

Anyone else have an idea?

I can't tell if that's an access cab or double cab in your avatar, and you don't have that info in your profile.

Regardless which cab, I take it you checked inside the door to make sure nothing dropped in there? Stupid, obvious shit first. It's not unheard of for screws to come loose and drop in the door.

If you checked that, I guess I'd follow basic tests, like ... With the keys torned to ON, but truck not-running, I'd roll down the window while in the truck, stick your head out the door and push against it; any clear movement outward? Do you see the door dummy light come on?

If yes on the light, but no outward movement, I'd suspect the pin switch (door plunger) the vehicle uses to tell if door is open or not, note that the DC and RC trucks have this along the B-pillar IIRC, and the AC trucks have this at the back door, I think. Ensure the booted plunder is properly fastened. Wiggle in every direction in case its post is broken. If totally secure and unbroken, I'd spray contact cleaning in it (may be needed from backside, i.e. remove it) and work it to get any corrosion out. Then re-fasten it, maybe it's what's rattling.

If yes on outward movement, I guess I'd check for play in the door hinges first and foremost; open the door in question to about 45°, lift the door up and down lightly while watching the hinges; any play?

If not, I'd check the U-shaped door strike as mentioned above to ensure it's securely fastened; when door is fully closed, is it flush on the outside? When closed with the window open, can you lift up/down/L/R and see movement?

Finally, I'd check the latch. With the door open, get a steel bar or maybe a larger drill bit like 1/4"-3/8" and use it to close the latch as if you were the door strike. Pull out the drill bit, get a good grip on the latch by sticking your finger where the bit was, wiggle the hell out of it; any play?

If it's none of the above, I have NFC what the hell the problem could be.

But I'd share one last thing with you - these trucks have a notorious window rattle inside the door, when the window is open anywhere from about 5% to 50% (cracked to about halfway open). So you may also want to see if the problem exists with the windows all the way up, 1/3 open, and 2/3 open, in case that's your issue.

PS - There is also a complaint others have shared about some screw on the side mirrors coming loose. Some have had water intrusion issues too, which can lead to corrosion. I think you may be chasing two different gremlins: Door plunger, and the separate rattle. But I'm not there so can't say.

 

Have experienced something similar that had to do with the door courtesy lamp switch. Being almost 20 years old the driver door would come with barely a slight gap. I recently ordered all new ones 84231-53010 since I had another one flaky possibly due to body shop. In any case, it's a few minute test you can do to determine if the switch is flaky or even your door weatherstrip has bit the dust.

Stand outside driver door with it shut, push inward on door with right hand, barely unlatch door with left hand, light should come on. Push door in/out just enough to make door light on Instrument Cluster to go on and off. Does it take much of a gap to make light come on.

You could also simply door switches with each to check.

 

Did you ever get this fixed? I have the same issue with my 2000 Tundra. Drivers side door rattles like crazy at the top latch. Lubing the latch works slightly but still super annoying if the roads aren’t perfectly smooth which here in California is nowhere.
