Someone talk me off the ledge on this ‘22…or don’t

New dad with a 2017 Tacoma who has quickly realized we have outgrown this truck.

I have an opportunity to get a 2022 Tundra TRD OR with 63,000 km on it for $48,500 CAD. Original engine but VIN is on the recall list. Upgrades/ Mods include:
- 1.75” rough country level
- TRD wheels 35”
- K02’sTonneau cover
- Lunar Rock paint

Based on what I’ve seen in the area, average market price without the upgrades is around $50,000 CAD.

Good deal? Buyer beware?

I’m just waiting for pricing on a 2025 to compare what the cost would be to go new.

Pass on the first year build, I say that beyond the engine recall.

also, rough country blows and with 35's those are going to be load E, which is reduce your ride quality and MPG.

 

I wouldn't really trust Rough Country for much beyond some leveling spacers, but I have those on my truck, and they're just fine. Agree with what you said on the first year build though.

 

K02 or K03 tires are just fine for ride quality. Been running them for years.

 

Buy it and get the warranty.

 

What improved between 22 and 23 to stay away from? Not arguing, just want your input. Maybe first year build may have hiccups on the assembly line on occasion? Leading to phantom inconsistent issues from lack of repeatability of manufacturing?

I love my used 22 Limited. Is it perfect? no, but I did what was suggested above, and got a 84 month / 125K mile bumper to bumper warranty. I didn't do that in fear of first year model, but did it due to all the electronic components in cars today. I can do a lot mechanically for my maintenance... but heck with how expensive these repairs can get today!

Appreciate everyone's input. As expected, a bit of a mixed bag of opinions and ultimately comes down to my personal finances and appetite for risk.

I did get pricing back on 2025’s though:

- 2025 Tundra CrewMax Limited: $69,560 CAD + taxes (includes a $4,000 F&F discount)

- 2025 Tundra CrewMax SR: $60,441 CAD + taxes (includes a $4,000 F&F discount)

Finance rate of 4.69%. Not as bad as I thought, but it's still a decent chunk of money.

I also negotiated the guy with the ‘22 OR down to $47,000 CAD, including a fresh oil change and tire rotation (yesterday) as well as an entire set of pads and rotors for the front and back brakes...which has me leaning more towards this option. It is a higher trim level than the SR, which is closer to the price I would like to pay, and has the mods that I would have most likely wanted to do myself, and it is in Lunar Rock, which I have always wanted. I would love all of the bells and whistles of the Limited, but I can't justify that big of a price tag where I am currently at in life. The hope is I can sell my Taco for a decent price and this is an incremental jump for me.

 

I would not buy a 2022 that needs a motor for that kind of $$.

There's no zero cost anywhere in life. Adults know it.

 

Step back and evaluate priorities. Maybe give it some time to let the dust settle. Kids/family should be at the top of the list (and they are are expensive). Most important attributes of a vehicle may be safe, efficient, practical, three-rows (maybe, eventually), etc. Do you live in snow country? A big top-heavy truck/SUV may be unstoppable but its not the safest on an icy highway (or in crash).

If you are going to invest in a vehicle, what vehicle does your family really need? If it has to be a Tundra, then I will say our 3G Tundra is amazing in so many ways, but would shy away from a 22.

PS: when I was in your place, we rolled with my 97 Tacoma as a second vehicle for several years. We had definitely outgrown it. Then we traded it for a Sequoia as the mountain/towing/road-trip vehicle (second to a newer CRV). YMMV.

 

I live 3+ hours from my nearest Toyota dealer. If I needed a motor I'd be looking at a loaner and at least 1200km of hazardous driving not to mention the time without my truck. As mentioned above, its hardly a zero cost job.

 

What trim is the 22 and is that a crewmax? If it’s a limited off road crewmax buy it. Compared to a SR offroad extended cab, don’t buy that.

 

It’s the SR5 trim with TRD Off Road package. If it was a Limited, it’d be a no brainer!

 

So just traded a 2023 1794 TRD with 19k for $51k they are selling it for $55k Certified. That's US $ of course. There are WAY better deals out there on new or certified used. You can steal a left over high trim Tundra $8-12k off and has all the toys that you don't really need but are nice and will help resale. Any Toyota store with a new 2024 in stock will kill to get rid of it and honestly my 24 is quieter than my 23, they stepped up QC. Canada may be different but I have always had a hard time justifying buying a Toyota used vs new here in the USA they hold value so strong it's not a bargain to buy used late model.

 

Buy what you want to drive and be proud of it as this purchase will likely be a ~10 year decision. Sounds like you like the 22, then get it. Don’t do what Wyoming said, he’s thinking too rationally. Bump that you only live once

 

I was in the same boat as the OP. I had a 22 Tacoma SR and after 2 years traded because my boys had outgrown the truck. The dealership gave me what was still owed on the Tacoma and a down payment out of it. I got a used lease turn in 22 Tundra SR5 that only had 33,000 on it. Just had the motor replaced on the recall and Toyota suppplied a loaner and coverd the cost. If you like the 22 go for it. I didn't have any problems out of mine, but went ahead with the motor replacement for peace of mind as I tow a travel trailer parto f the year.
