We picked her up in Nashville, early 2020

Needed a tow vehicle for our 23' couples' travel trailer

She had all her service records and two apparently responsible previous owners...she'd clocked 215k miles by this point but her timing belt had been twice replaced and documented, with all regular maintenance done...we liked her on first sight and paid a whopping $6,500 to take her home

Since then she's pulled us from TN to Key West (twice) to Maine to New Mexico to Toronto to Utah, all without a moment's trouble

Now pushing 275k miles, and with us planning future trips to the Rockies in both the US and Canada, we're thinking of giving the good girl a rest and a lighter load going forward

Thinking of a Gen 2 with around 100k on the clock

Would welcome advice as to staying with the 4.6 or stepping up to the 5.7

    Sincerely,
    Ken & VictoriaAa

Go with the 5.7. Bigger truck and all. No one hates having more power and capability. The transmission and rear end are beefed up for the 5.7 as well. Resale will be better also. That said, if you stumble across a smoking deal on a 4.6, it should serve your needs fine if your 4.7 worked well.

I’ve owned a 1st Gen with 4.7 and 2nd Gen with 5.7. Speaking only of towing, the 2nd Gen tows noticeably better in my experience pulling boats and enclosed trailers. I prefer just about everything else on the 1st Gen personally, but the 2nd Gen tows really nice.

I grew up in the Rockies, you will like the power of the 5.7 towing in those mountains

I had a 1st gen w/4.7 and it did everything I asked of it for 6 years towing my 5,500 lb. travel trailer.

The 4.6 would be a decent bump in HP & TQ.

But the 5.7 is a huge improvement. Huuuuge. :benchpress:

If you have the choice between better, or WAAAYY better, which are you going with?

5.7, you will not be disappointed especially since you're towing. Good luck in finding your next truck! :)

After reading the replies here, I did my homework and built a matrix of 2011-2019 5.7 78" bed local Tundras.

One 2018 stood out from the pack: One owner, with all scheduled maintenance performed on- time at the Toyota dealership where it was bought, and with 132k miles.

Went to see it in Atlanta and it was everything as advertised.

Paid $23k and drove her home.

Wife is ecstatic. (Years ago she'd painted our master bedroom a dark taupe that changes tints in varying lighting. The Smoked Mesquite on our Tundra is very similar to that).

Black leather seats are rich and comfy, and the truck is surprisingly driver-friendly.

That 5.7L can't wait to pull our travel trailer up the Rockies soon.

Again, thanks to the many posters here who recommended your favorite setups.
