Ok, after a 20 min drive to drop my kid off to school, turned the truck off but attempting to start it back up, the dash dimmed and went totally black, door locks, steps, nothing working.

Dealer said it probably is the battery, so put on the emergency battery booster and it started. Battery needs to be replaced....25K miles, 2023 hybrid model. Vehicle driven daily, no previous issues.
    Typically batteries go 5 years.

I have seen articles about having a back up, or dual batteries for overloading set ups, but is there a possible upgrade to help prevent being stranded? we live in the mountains and areas where cell phones dont work.

Anyone else experience 12V battery failure? (its under the rear seat)

Happens all the time. Ive purchased brand new batteries that were bad out of the gate.

and 5 years? These days- lucky to get 3 years out of a factory battery.

I would not worry about dual batteries and all that unless you need another to run other stuff. Just keep a starter/booster in the truck just in case. Noco makes some good ones that will have plenty of oomf to start the truck for about $100. Cheap insurance for those times when you need it. I recommend the Noco GB40.

Can you even do dual batteries on a hybrid? Doubt you have any extra room inside the cab or under the hood

Thank you so much for the input. Yes sir you are so correct, wife brought the DBpower 2750 (left it with her thinking she may need it due to her care being older, did not expect a 2 year old truck) we purchase a few month ago to rescue me in her 17 LC :(

Not AGM battery 3 years is the average lifespan.

So I've been eyeballing the Trekure Beta 07 jump starter with the air compressor feature.

Do any of you have experience with this unit and specifically with the air compressor? Will it actually fill a truck tire that's mostly flat in an emergency situation?

Are there any other models with the air compressor feature y'all would suggest? I trust recommendations from this forum more than Amazon reviews.

    Thanks

I have found that the stock batteries that are installed in all Toyotas straight off the assembly line are garbage and if you can get three years out of one you're lucky. I've own several Toyotas over the last 25 years or so and the last three, 2006 Matrix, 2012, corolla, and 2019 highlander all needed batteries after three years. I've already had to put two toyota batteries in the highlander. So far the Tundra battery hasn't crapped out but when it does, I will be replacing with an Interstate.

It's strange though that a starting battery would crap out in a hybrid. I would think Toyota would have wired the hybrid battery to the starting battery to keep it fully charged all the time. I know this is how the system works in their fully electric cars.

Agreed, with all this battery power available, you would think an emergency jumpstart system could be engineered easily, like most fishing boats:).......The battery in th 17LC lasted 6 years, what the dealer replaced it with has a toyota sticker on but is nothing close to the original, they must be outsourcing batteries from somewhere not of the same quality.

You might want to check with the dealer to see if they will at least prorate you some warranty cost on a new battery. Typically they are good for 2 years and 24k miles at least……that way you could choose to put the warranty equivalent towards a beefier battery

Good idea, but I tried and no one there was receptive. Battery checked out OK but low, charging system OK, they charged the battery up and that was the solution. Was told not to use truck on accessory mode a lot (it was on 2 minutes while watching the kid board the school bus????). Told them we have done the same thing for two years, with no issues, asked them to replace it or possibly go with AGM, but no. we have had it exactly 23 month, interesting. Oh yes, one of the consultants recommended carrying a NOCO . If it was up to me I would install an Optima battery.

I would call the service manager and if you don’t get anywhere call Toyota and ask about their battery warranty…..dealerships don’t like getting pinged that corporate was alerted to potential shady business practices:

I've done this too. I keep a portable jumper in my truck and in my wife's car. I use the antigravity personal jumper. Been stranded twice because of Toyota batteries.

Yours is the 3rd I think I’ve read about. It happens on all vehicles. Some right out of the gate.

If you need a jump pack, I personally recommend the Gooloo on the jungle site. I have a 2000 for my truck, and a 3000 for the wife's. Honestly I can't tell the difference in capability, but either has not failed to jump anything. I've jumped countless cars at work, but more recently the 3000 has jumped a completely dead Xterra with a 4.0l motor. The 2000 jumped my Tundra a few weeks ago with a dead battery. More reasonably priced and supposedly bigger starting juice.

100% and now that I know this could happen going for the Gooloo ha.

Also need to look at motor so prepared to find the jump points quick in cold conditions.

It used to be the FACTORY battery (Yuasa/Panasonic) would last 7-10 years... we would have customers come in demanding a direct replacement and we'd have to tell them that is the JAPANESE sourced battery, here in the USofA all we have are the Interstate replacements. That never went over well

When I purchased my used 2022 Limited (non-hybrid) in October, I was told the battery is lifetime guaranteed. Why wold mine be and not this one? Makes me wonder now.

SOME Dealers in the SET sell a True-Start with a -LW at the end of the part#, THAT is the LW battery. Unheard of anywhere else, but we ended up getting a few batteries with that LABEL on them, they told us "oooops! wrong label" we'll replace them, I'm a GST dealer... what a mess
