I have a 2015 5.7 and was wondering what exhaust I should choose. I don’t want anything very loud. I like the sound of the TRD exhaust but it’s kinda pricy. I wanted to see if I could get some reviews from people who have had these exhausts: the performance cat back from Rough country, the 40 and 44 series flowmaster mufflers, and the TRD exhaust. I figured the flowmasters are going to be louder than the other two, but was curious if the RC is louder than the TRD because I’ve never heard it in person.

Whatever you choose, you’ll likely want to run a resonator to quiet the drone.

    Depends on budget;
    SPD is awesome
TRD systems can be found used on market place
Local muffler shop can replace the muffler and add a resonator

Call Keith @dirtydeeds. He has a wide variety of options and he is our go to guy for exhaust systems. I have the 8" without resonator along with a Banks Pedal Monster and a Stillen air intake. :D I had a Flowmaster.....you lose alot of low end torque. Keith's systems are truly performance gains. Well worth the money!!

Do a little more research into aftermarket exhausts and you’ll find that they tend to amplify droning frequencies in the cab. Some will make it unbearable to live with. The resonator counters the droning frequency to effectively eliminate or reduce it like noise canceling headphones do.

Gotcha. Could be a dumb question but can you replace the muffler with a resonator?

Drone is an unwanted frequency in the cab of our truck which occurs and dominates at 130hz.

If you think about it, that’s about the same frequency as when the Bass hits your subs. It’s a very long and deep frequency which pierces the walls of your neighbors house much less the floor of your truck.

another way to look at drone, it’s a mathematical formula. And Toyota knows this so they use another formula in their muffler to remove it.

an Amazon resonator is better at knocking down short high frequencies. Not low long frequencies like drone. All they do is give you less highs and mids to help cancel out the lows.

to get rid of drone on our trucks you have to cancel it out. I have a proven formula which does just that. Matter of fact, I’ve cancelled out the drone of every single exhaust system which has been, and is about to be mentioned on this thread.

With that said, a very easy formula to not drone:

    1. Flow thru muffler
    2. Smooth transition Y pipe
    3. Stock tailpipe
    4. Helmholtz resonator into stock tailpipe

feel free to give a call. I’m happy to walk you thru how to put together the above formula, sell you parts to do so, or sell you a proven bolt on solution. 760-877-4234.

I’ve posted a simple ‘formula’. Deviation from this formula causes either low end torque loss. Horsepower loss. Raspy exhaust sound. Or drone.

it’s very important to not go smaller in tubing diameter in any part of the exhaust system. But it’s also important not to go bigger than stock in the tailpipe section.

a muffler with chambers or walls inside also loses low end torque.

tundras are very different compared to vehicles before their time. But that said, the ‘formula’ is very simple and can be put together very cost effectively.

Call Keith at Dirty Deeds, if you want close to stock sound….12”. Sounds amazing, I immediately felt a change as soon as I left the shop, and it looks awesome. I get constant compliments on the 10" growl, without being offensive. Not sure you could do any better than Dirty Deeds. Amazing human. All the good words and forum posts are true. Bam for the win!

IMO, I wouldn’t go with anyone else. His entire Team is 1st class and a super Toyota expert and community supporter.

I have two chambered 3” mufflers w/ 3” tailpipe off each, dumped over the axle.

Drones very little, sounds good, didn't cost a lot and based off these forums, surprisingly still has enough torque to do everything exactly the same as before. Wild.

I went with the Stainless steel works headers to catback with the Xpipe
Sounds great but wanted to do a dump and go a little quieter. Bought the Carven TR mufflers thinking they would quiet it down and yea it made it way louder ended up buying a magnaflow muffler two in one out and has a deeper sound but much quieter

Which SW muffler did you go with, Legend or Redline?

I ordered Legend but received a Redline kit. I ended up modding mine and replaced a segment of the pipe with the SW smooth tube muffler (it is similar to a glass pack design but with stainless wool and louvered design). This eliminated the drone and improved the exhaust note for me.

Note I have a SC and their headers too.

I got the Redline, only thing I have to do though is remove the headers and get the bunges welded to the primary. I did not know the tundras need to run HOT
I never really noticed a drone when I had them on but when I put the carven on I had a lot of vibration in the cab

Yes I don't think it is the typical drone sound people complain about on more conventional exhaust set ups and it isn't the mufflers but more so their location.

The problem with the SW catback exhaust is the mufflers sit so far back near the axle the rest of the exhaust tubing before it acts like a tuning fork so you get this higher pitch sound in the cab. The muffler they provide is capable of sound dampening it just sits too far back and there isn't a whole lot of room to fit the oval mufflers further up front.

I suspect the Helmholtz resonators wont do a whole lot for you but I am sure other will disagree; putting clamps on the tubing helps dampen the sound. You can try something like this too:

Ahh ok I did not know that, I have mine dumped before the axle I wasn’t sure to go before the axle or after, I’ve ran a dumped one on a previous truck 2014 raptor and had know issues. I’ve see others run after the axle.
