When I went from package car delivery to driving semis at work, I was literally on call Sunday night to Friday night for 5 years.
That means whatever time I got off work, they could call me to come back when my 10 hours off was over.
Usually calling about 8 hours after I got off.
There were weeks I would start Monday morning at 2:00 and by the time Friday came around I was going to work at 23:45..
Just waiting around to be called to work, couldn't plan or do much of anything.
In the end it was worth it..

Years later it was changed to they couldn't call you until your 10 hours was off was done..

 

Rotating 24 on, 24 off, after 3rd day on, off for 4. About once every 30 or so days, depending on OT shifts or time off, I'll be subject to mandatory hold-over along with 2 other staffing positions; if someone calls out, whoever is on hold-over for that position will have to stay on duty if no one else picks up the shift, usually resulting in a 48 on but can be up to 72 on. During hurricanes, depending on how the shifts fall, we could be here for several days; during Hurricane Florence I was at work 7 days straight with only 12 hours off the clock, and some guys were on the clock the whole time.

Me too. I have a hard time with learning in a classroom. I tried community college and I couldn't get though any classes. I went to work and flourished.

I love my current schedule, 4 day work week. Mon.-Thurs. 7-530. The only thing I would like to change is starting at 6 and leaving at 430 would be ideal.

 

Ah, emergency services get it rough and aren't paid enough. Whether it's Fire, LEO, EMTs, etc. they do true public service.

I didn't go to university and have never worked a shitty shift like that. Never done nights. Days have usually been 10 hours, so 2 OT hours a day. I currently do 14 ten hour days, then 7 days off, 4 weeks of holidays on top of that.

I have had loads of 14, 16 and 18 hour days but that's rare now and even when it wasn't, I liked stacking them bills.

Zero debt outside of my mortgage, and make more than all but 1 of my university going friends.

 

The trades are awesome.

Same here, I was a B/C student in high school. Did one year of trade school then landed an electrical apprenticeship when I was 20.

Same here, most people have no idea how much you can make without a "degree".
