Fantastic job with getting your kiddo out doing maintenance on a vehicle together. My old man always had me out to "help" him work on our stuff - I would drag my feet and complain because all I was doing was holding a flashlight, holding down the page of the Chilton's or Haynes manuals, and other seemingly trivial tasks...I sometimes feel guilt thinking about all the hard times I gave him when he'd drag me out. Little did I know that he instilled the joy of working with my hands and doing DIY truck stuff. So I will drag my kiddo out and do the same for him

I'm not going to lie, after meeting a fair share of men 22-40 years old that didn't even know how to change engine oil I realized that my daughter might have a slim chance of finding a man that can perform these duties. I told her she may be on her own.

    So far she has done:

    Spark plugs- 400.00 saved
    Transmission service- 250.00 saved
    Two oil changes- 120.00 saved
Rear shocks and front struts- 1000.00 saved
Radiator cap- I really hope that toyota would not charge someone to do this.
Air filter service/upgrade to synthetic media- 50.00 saved
    MAF sensor cleaned
    Checked drive belt tension.
Radiator drain/fill with thermostat replacement- 200. saved.

Not a bad way to save 2000.00. I know exactly where that will go.

Last night we talked to our oldest about her sweet 16 birthday present. She really only wants a LEGO Porsche car (and she is going to get it), but in addition she will be getting a start up IRA with our contribution of 500.00 and we will start teaching finances and investing strategies. She has a monthly budget now and does bills with us every month, but it is time to really jump into this money management and future goals.

Something my parents lacked was not teaching their two sons money management. We did fine and both did well financially. They never really invested except gold/silver/guns (and that did serve them well) and never financed anything (except small mortgages). In a roundabout way they did teach us, but not in all aspects of finance. I had to co-sign for my parents to get their first credit card in their 50's. The only credit they had was from home purchases at very short durations (under 7 years).

It's an irrefutable cause for revocation of your man card if you cannot do basic vehicle maintenance imo. I also feel it is a feather in any woman's cap to be able to do such things themselves - some, including myself, view it as an aphrodisiac

    You're a good dad, Chris.

Thank you Charles. That is very kind of you to say.

This world doesn't suffer fools..that's for sure. There are a lot of revoked man cards then. I was pretty shocked at how many just at my place of employment. :eek2:
I helped change that and started teaching these guys how to change oil, gear lube, bearings, trans services, etc.

Really cool that you turned into a HS Shop teacher at work - kinda makes you wonder who these guys' Dads are? Of course, it's quite possible they didn't have one at home which is sad.

I was lucky enough to have a buddy whose dad was the King of Shadetree mechanics and would help us work on stuff. Slapped a 350 in an old CJ and put 35s on it. My boy was the cool guy in the school parking lot on days he drove that. That said a lot considering our side of the parking lot was the muddy side full of jacked up mud slingers.

Some had single parents and most the others was military families. So...kinda like single parent families.
