    Hello,

The subwoofer (I think) in the JBL system makes a rattling noise when turning up the radio/aux.

I have mitigated this in the last few months by reducing the bass to -5 but want to get it fixed. The sound becomes aggressive when the bass is set to +5. Any ideas/experience? Much appreciated.

you're barely powering it and it sounds like its blown out. maybe considered just replacing it?

Any ideas on how I can decide whether it is a power issue or the subwoofer? Haven't been able to find this issue online.

Sure sounds like the subwoofer is blown. Pull off the grill, check the cone travel. Is it rough, grating, check to see if the cone material is ripped. The travel should be a a smooth transition in to out... If there's any rubbing, grinding, or sticking, replacement time!
Good luck, let us know what your fix is!

You take the woofer out and use a woofer testing apparatus to do a rub/buzz test. By that time it would be good to have a replacement on hand anyway.

That sub is toast. You're hearing the voice coil/former grinding every time the cone travels.

    Time to upgrade.

Mine did that and it was the surround separated from the cone. I bought a new foam surround from ebay...easy fix and cheap! https://www.ebay.com/itm/302420025327
Getting ready to do the front doors too.

Hello everyone. Over the last few years I have been driving the truck in silence (not my primary vehicle). The problem has grown to encompass not only the sub but now many of the speakers.

So, I have purchased a set of the 12 OEM JBL speakers and plan to replace all of them. Should be a pretty uneventful install (because they’re the same speakers and should plug and play right in). While I’m in the door panel I’m gonna add some sound deadening (cause why not). I will post a before and after.

@cran2 thank you for the recommendation. Since I was already going to have to take the door apart I went ahead and just replaced the whole speaker.
