Dealer: $1600+ for alternator

2016 4x4 5.7l.

What's a normal alternator replacement price? $1600 seems skyyyy high to me.

 

My local mechanic quoted me right around $1k. OEM replacement.

 

Seems a bit steep, but it could be your area.

It is a shitty job. I had to do it.

It was easier to remove the fan, shroud and radiator of course serp belt, and loosen the power steering pump to gain access to the alternator. It took me 4 hours using a car hoist.

 

Yeah, I've been reading about how horrible it is. Seems like one of those repairs where it pays to pay someone else.

What other parts should be replaced while it's torn apart?

 

I put in a new belt, idler and tensioner idler and new coolant.

Check the water pump for shaft seal leaks. Mine was fine.
