High mileage?

    I have not seen this thread. But anyways I got my new to me '07 Tundra 4x4 Crewmax at 274k miles on it. Not a lot of repair info but the seller I got it from give me all the info pics etc. I needed to at least go and take a look at it 200 miles away from my location. It was super clean with no rust. It was no beauty queen as it was used a work truck. But for what I need it for I was happy. I got it for $7k in Sept '21.

    After buying I baselined all the fluids.. Tranny, differentials etc. All the fluids were new...Golden oil from the diff's and cherry oil (non burnt) from the transmission. So I did'nt change anything yet except for an oil change. Its working great so far. Although I WFH I really dont put in miles on it. I have taken it mild off roading without any problems. Its a great truck.

    And having another Toyota T100 with 400k miles on it. Works like a charm. So I had absolutely no problems buying high mileage Toyo trucks. Toyotas engineer stuff to another level. Almost like they are designing for space equipment with the just another level of quality control and dependability. Now that does not mean it never goes bad, but with Toyo's selling so many of the products, we have great forums that essentially solve a lot of the major issue of these vehicles.

    Old thread, new post.

    144,000 miles 2009, and it’s getting to the point where it needs attention.

    New radiator, rear wheel bearings, starter, these things are not cheap.

    Time to trade for an F150.

    Yup, sell it to me. Will get it road ready in a weekend for 1500 and run it another 140K miles.

    How much do F150’s retail for nowadays (55-70k)?

    I don’t get it - was he complaining that he couldn’t give his tundra MORE attention at 144k miles? Feeling guilty about taking without giving in return? Or maybe his mechanic buddy is going broke without the need for constant repairs? Has to spend too much time on Honey-Dos and not enough quality time in the shop? :notsure:

    Use to do this stuff myself, but running a busy business, don’t have time. Been in the industry, way back, some things are better left to the dealer.

    20k back had the plugs replaced, changed all fluids, serviced transmission ( filter plus oil)

    Now

    Brakes, radiator, rear wheel bearings, starter plus normal service goodies with dealer running close to 7k

    That is what the blue book trade in value is.

    I would expect water pump, belt alternator not too far off.

    Might as well do a new truck plus business tax write off.

    Would have loved a new Tundra, but no V8 plus all the new truck issues is driving me elsewhere.

    If I wrenched myself, could probably keep it going forever, but if time is an issue, going beyond 150 k miles is a hassle.

    Trade in, plus this bill payment down on a new truck rather than repairs, if you don’t wrench yourself?

    Then there is the trust we have to put into the tech who will be doing this?

    Thing is, Toyota works on flat rates from a standard factory manual. So that is what anyone would pay if they go to the dealer.

    I use to be in the industry way back, use to train and certify techs for Mercedes among other things. It is not always possible to train all the little secrets in a shop manual. Saw lots of horror stories from customers taking their vehicle to non dealers for major repairs.

    So really, if I keep this truck, I would have to wrench on it myself. Run a small business, slammed with work, there is no time to wrench, without all the facilities available.

    Or just go to a reputable local shop and get it done for 1/2 what Toyota quoted you. And pocket the rest of the money for your small business and not go another $45,000 in debt.

    About 202,000 on my 2013 5.7. Bought it a bit over 5 years ago with 116,000 on the clock. No problems.It is my personal vehicle and work truck. Pull a dump trailer and a bed full of tools daily spring through fall.

    Here he is covered with salt for the past few weeks at about -10 out.

    My boy, have you never heard of independent mechanics? If you feel the need to burn money, do you. If you feel the need to drop $50K+ on a new truck instead of ~$4-5K on deferred maintenance, do you. I’ll never understand.

    Yes, heard of independent mechanics, actually I use to be one before retirement and starting a business. As mentioned above, the latter leaves me no time to work on this truck. It use to be a case of my motorcycles and my cars/trucks were like my lady, no one touches them but me.

    That still holds for my bike, but when a lucrative business needs time, the hassle to get special tools, handle fluids, crawl around on the garage floor, etc. costs more than the time I have to take away from my business.

    From personal experience, training techs in brand specific vehicles (Mercedes ) can lead to nasty surprises when using independent mechanics, or an Independent service shop. Not taking that risk.

    What you are missing, is with trade in, plus this repair bill, plus a full business tax write off for a truck with a 6.5ft box, new will run me between 15-20k.

    Anyway, I pulled the trigger, had the truck repaired by the dealer, perhaps future alternator, water pump and for the rest it should be good.

    All heckling aside, I see where you are at on dumping it for a new vehicle vs dumping more money in to it. The write off is nice, but I end up putting a lot more in to the new truck than the initial purchase price (suspension, topper, bedslide, more tools, hitches, tires, etc). But if it makes sense to dump it, I woulda made you an offer on it :)

    However, as alluded to, these trucks seem to do well with good maintenance. My ‘13 is at 218k; I’ve replaced the tie rods and a piece of weatherstripping. Brakes, suspension, tires - those are all maintenance to me, but the truck has treated me well. I will continue to run it until it starts giving me issues.

    I am probably anal.
    Starter went at 140k, was the solenoid. Lots of short distances and on construction sites. To be expected.

    Brakes three times, tires three times, pretty normal.

    Had the transmission oil changed at 60k and at 120k again, but this time dropped the pan and changed the filter also.

    At around 125k, she started losing water, 3/4 bottle on 5,000 miles, I could see a wet spot where the core goes into the bottom pan. Could probably have lived with that, but had the radiator and hoses replaced now, at 144k.

    Around 140k, I could hear the rear wheel bearings. I am the only one who could hear that, not my passengers, no one else. I could hear them. There was a tiny wet spot on the left axle bearings. Changed now at 144k, truck is quiet. This truck has towed once, for about 200 miles in its life, it has never carried a heavy load, no dirt roads, so I would assume that this wear is pretty normal. Most people probably don’t notice it.

    The belt was changed once, can’t remember the mileage.

    My suspension, tie rods, front wheel bearings are still perfect.

    One of the main reasons I am holding on to the truck, is the 5,7L V8 motor. That sure is a sweet motor, sad they are no longer using it in the Tundra.

    As a business owner it makes a LOT of sense to take the write off on a new vehicle and not spend the time to nickel and dime older vehicles. I completely understand where you’re coming from. Even a super reliable platform will have issues at it ages and when time is quite literally money it makes sense to drive something newer.

    190,000 miles on my ‘13 5.7L. Had the cam towers re-sealed at 100k miles which was the only major unforeseen expense.
    No surprises other than routine maintenance (mostly diy).

    Just two weeks ago, I bought a 2010 5.7L in immaculate condition with 179k on it. Truck is almost mint, aside from a few small dings on the outside. Inside is like new, and truck runs like a dream with LOTS of power. This will be the one they bury me in, like the guy from Used Cars. :D
