Damn.... first off it's Cali, people can't get CPR without having the risk of being sued, for ruining their debt.... I'm CPR and AED certified, instructor kept bringing up the fact that we could be sued for whatever reason for jumping into action, that I would just rubber neck it for a little bit and keep on moving. Not that I'm trying to be mean or hate other people, but the consequences of helping people in Cali are often more negative than positive. Now Nevada, I did readily jump into action happily a couple of times during car wrecks and other accidents.

To date I have never given my name or any identifying info when I have helped in a situation like this....

I come in, do what I need to, and get out of there as quick as possible.

@dondino i think you’ll be happy with the meditac kit. I shopped around for a while and even shopped to make my own piecemeal kit but could never get the cost below the meditac kit. The full blown trauma kit is ~$110 and I’d feel comfortable doing a field operation so long as I could call my surgeon friends and stayed at a holiday inn the night before

for $110 it was a no-brainer and cheap insurance.

kit I got. Upgraded the bag:

I have pretty extensive medical background between military and civilian courses and real world scenarios and always recommend that people add things as they learn and practice how to use them. Pushing on this guy’s chest would not have stopped the bleeding from a GSW to the leg, and to be honest the basic CPR courses are pretty limited. If being prepared for medical emergencies interest you definitely look for more advanced training opportunities, it’s super helpful to know. We saved a kid just last summer at a special needs camp by being trained and prepared with a good basic trauma kit in my wife’s vehicle :)

I am a retired RN and have extensive experience in a lot of different areas of acute care. I realize that CPR is not going to help with an arterial spray. However it is much more likely that someone can have an issue where CPR is vital to staying alive. Pushing on his chest would have done nothing for his current problem. His leg was probably turned into burger after being shot with a pheasant load and even the best training sometimes cannot prevent the inevitable. Unless someone carries several liters of 0.9 NS and a large bore IV in their truck there is no way to replace the volume he was losing and even replacement is no guarantee. Hypovolemic shock is one of the first things that comes to mind and Joe average would have zero knowledge of what that even means.
To the guy that said mouth to mouth is something he wouldn't do, that is not even recommended anymore, and if required, there is a special face mask to apply to the victim so there is no direct contact involved.

California (most states) have Good Samaritan laws. I would love to see the DA that tries to prosecute someone attempting to render aid. Now the only way someone can get into trouble is if you start, can't stop until exhausted.

One thing I hope more people do is carry decent first aid kits. The ones for 29.95 don't cut it and gloves, tourniquet, and a one way breathing devise at a minimum.

I have had to administer first aid a few times and a tourniquet.
One time in particular was on a 17 year old male that had attempted suicide by cutting his wrists and inner thighs. He was pumping blood. I had good luck that day and an Army combat medic stopped to assist in saving this boys life. After we got the knife away from him we went to work. I installed a compress/tourniquet on his leg to stop all the major loss of blood and worked on some less critical blood loss injuries. The Army medic handled his wrists and smaller injuries. We instructed a bystander to call 911 as soon as we were on the scene. I have never been so happy to see an ambulance/first responders in my life.

The teenager lived and I felt so sad that he felt like this was the only way out. He was overweight and bullied.

Out of all the 20+ bystanders around us, the Army guy and myself were the only ones to have medical gloves and first aid kits (we were in a residential area on the side of the road). I thought everyone has a first aid kit in their vehicles. I was dead wrong.

Someone was watching out for us that day. I told the Army guy he did a great job and he was trained well. A couple tours to the sandbox/Afghanistan gave him plenty of experience.

Came here to say this exactly. CA has the Good Samaritan law. You cannot be sued for rendering first aid.
I'm a firm believer that everyone should have at least some basic first aid training.

Years ago we carried a kid 13 miles off a mountain so steep the mules and donkeys couldn’t get down it. Made a stretcher out of two tree branches and a couple shirts, strapped him down, and started taking turns hiking. Real bad head injury, was bleeding real good. Every single time we stopped the guy who was supposed to be in charge kept making people put his legs up real high. I kept immediately putting them back down haha. Homie was clamming up and just kept saying, if someone is in shock you need to raise their legs up! Over and over. This was military days so he kept saying he was going to destroy me and my guys career for not obeying his orders. Long story medium, we finally got the kid to a vehicle/road, they took him to a helo, and he survived, but has a gnarly scar to show for it!

It's been said already, but Good Samaritan laws are fairly common in most states, and even if they weren't you'd have to do something pretty egregious to find yourself holding any level of liability.

My philosophy is this, and no I don't expect everyone to feel the same about these situations but it's how I operate...

If a particular situation dictates that my intervention (on whatever level) could mean the difference between someone's life or death and the particular intervention that's necessary is something that I am properly equipped for, trained, and experienced in providing then I'm going to step up and handle business. At that moment, I'm not going to worry about possible or potential ramifications that may be on the back-end (such as liability)... this decision has already been made and my wife and I have already discussed this as well.

She fully knows and understands what her role would be if she's present during the incident; knows what to say to 911 if she's making the call; knows how to get herself to safety whether it's a road side accident or an active shooter we are dealing with, and before someone flames me for leaving my wife to fend for herself, that's not what I'm talking about... If we are in imminent danger, then I will be safely removing her from the hostile environment and then may or may not return to intevene, render aid, etc. depending on the totality of the circumstances...

Point being, I refuse to turn a blind eye to someone or a situation in need of immediate intervention simply because it's not MY problem, or out of fear of being sued for my actions... but's that me!

I watched a guy get rolled over by a Tacoma one year at Moab Rim trail. Nobody was helping him. I was floored....and this was the people he was with.
My brother and I patched him up the best we could and had search and rescue take him down.

Later that evening we seen him at Moab Brewery and chatted with him for a while. Ended up being good to go, lots of deep cuts and bruising. He was really disappointed that it was us that jumped in to administer aid/help instead of his group.

I was like "you need new friends."

Just ordered that kit... $88 with all discounts and free shipping

To go with my other 4 first aid kits. 2 REI, a Desert Squadron, and a self sourced kit. additionally every car has a basic FAK.

I used to teach First Aid and CPR/AED certification classes for the Navy. Thinking back over 20 years ago...

I have had additional field trauma training via my local Fire Department as a member of The CERT team

Something I don't think I saw mentioned was tampons; can be quite useful for packing penetrating wounds when a tourniquet can't be used. As far as far as good samaritan/reasonable man laws go, since I am trained and certified in BLS, it only applies as long as I act in good faith, am not reckless in my care, and probably most importantly, do not exceed my certified scope of practice.
