Gotta love surprises... Timing belt off one tooth

2001 SR5 AC 4.7 4x4 240 thousand some odd miles. Great trucks! Mine started seeping coolant at t-stat housing, both at the pipe o-ring and where it meets WP. Timing belt & WP were done approx 8 years ago (50K miles) per sticker on the intake, so I'm going to do the works.

Whoever did the previous work was inept. Orange silicone gobbed around the o-ring and the square inlet both. And more concerning, timing belt is off by one tooth on the passenger side (right side? I always forget...)

Question for the group is: I assume that I should be OK easing that cam clockwise one tooth when I reassemble, as long as I've routed the belt counterclockwise from the crank and haven't yet pulled the pin on the tensioner, correct?

 

Or you could use the Phillips bit trick posted by another member to reposition the cam before you remove the old belt.

But yes, this is the trick Bryan mentioned, you're effectively using a tool almose everyone has, and lifting the belt up 1 tooth high, so it skips a tooth forward, but do confirm the timing with the site I linked after in case you hop it the wrong way :

Thanks for the links, I wasn't able to find the mentioned "Phillips bit trick" but pretty much envisioned it was this sort of procedure. Much appreciated! Still pleasantly surprised at how well this truck has run for me for the past 3 years being out of time.

For you or anyone arriving here, the second youtube above by @shifty` it's best to start at 0 time and watch till 2:44 mark. Works like a charm.

 

My phrasing was misleading. I searched for that after bfunke's comment but before shifty's, and could not find. So, those YT videos shifty linked were invaluable to me. Such a simple procedure. I went out at lunchtime and got the belt corrected in about 2 minutes, now I can move forward with the job. Once again, I thank the group for having a simple answer!

LOL! The day Facebook becomes my go-to for an answer on anything, that's the day you can shoot me. Pretty sure this place was a great resource to me when I did the starter and knock sensors (rodent damage) a few years ago, surely many more jobs since then.
