Hey guys! Been reading a lot of great info here for the last few months. I am the original owner of my 05. It turns 20 yrs old this month! Wanting to do a few upgrades in the next few months to the old girl. I bought a new HU from Crutchfield. I need to tap a speed sensor wire for the GPS. Is the speed sensor wire part of this connector?

That little gray 5 pin connector should only have two wires in it, Blk/Red for reverse and Grn/Or for VSS(speed sensor) which are for OEM HU's that came with navigation.

Call Crutchfield, they are always pretty solid on the phone.

I did call Crutchfield a couple of times. They are very helpful. The tech that I talked to today was not familiar with the gray harness though.

What head unit did you purchase? And why for are you wanting to used the VSS? There are advantages to bypassing it...

I got the JVC KW-M875BW. Didn't know I could bypass it. Crutchfield didn't mention that. I am not an expert on electronics by any means. I was just following their directions. :)

Crud, I was thinking of the green parking brake wire. THAT one, you should just be able to ground it, then the HU thinks you are always parked. Kind of... My head unit doesn't have wireless CarPlay so I don't have firsthand experience with a workaround for the VSS. I just needed to ground the green parking brake wire to access all the menus while the vehicle is motion - allegedly...

It only exists in the later-year trucks. Definitely 05-06. Not sure which/if it exists in earlier years.

Got it. I have to run the green parking brake wire, too.

    As mentioned above, bypass it.

For JVC, I'm quite certain you can take the parking brake wire on the JVC harness and ground it. Some of the other brands want to sense resistance or something on the line, and the PAC TR1 (which costs like $10) is adequate for that.

Great! I will do that. I don't plan on using any video on the HU. Just want nav, hands free calling and wireless Andoid Auto.

Crutchfield won't (can't?) tell you to just ground the green wire to the HU or other suitable ground. The lawyers have ruined the world!

Finally got back to work on the HU. The gray connector does have two wires. The Gr/Or is the VSS. The other wire is Gr/Red. Is the Gr/Red for reverse?

Yes, that is my understanding, but recommend you to download the EWD on this site to confirm.

The gray connector was for OEM radios that had navigation and the 2 signals out are SPD(VSS) and REV with their noted colors.

No Blk/Red on mine, BubbaW. I'll look through the EWD to find out what the Gr/Red wire is for. Thanks for the response.

It's an AC/RC versus DC thing. Bubba posted the DC version above, AC/RC change the color of the wire. It's more obtuse in showing that in the EWD because they split it between two pages. Here's the two pages combined.

You're still king on anything involving wiring/electronics in these trucks in my book. If I had a dollar for every time I missed I was looking at the wrong cab or wrong engine type in the EWD's I could retire already. Much respect due for your clarity/skills there.

Thanks Shifty and Bubba. I would have never figured that out from the EWD.
