What have you done to your NOT 3rd Gen Tundra today?

I imagine it's kinda like the battleship grey that Dodge did on the Challengers for a bit? Smokeshow was their "cement" type and battleship replaced it.

Ok, that I have seen and I do like. It must be one that doesn't photograph well.

 

I firmly believe I am in my last half-ton truck. I love my Tundra. I want to regear and put 37s on it. It's such a great hunting truck (especially if you're not precious about the inevitable pinstripes). It's so good for adventure road trips and for driving forest service roads here in the Southeast or out in Colorado. I love how well it turns, the visibility, the short nose, the maneuverability (which is ridiculously great given its size), and the rock-solid drivetrain. Plus, a simple 2" lift up front, and I can fit skinny 35s with no rubbing.

I still think a used 3UR-FE Tundra with good maintenance is the absolute best buy in the segment.

Toyota could have enticed me to jump to a 3rd gen, but the weird decisions regarding the frame and mismatched CV axles, and it being longer and lower with worse visibility and worse turning are huge bummers for me because of how I use my truck. The nagging infotainment and engine uncertainty issues don't help, either.

We will probably go 3500 after this.

But the more immediate vehicle decision is which Tesla we're going to get. Lol.

 

It is kind of strange that the 3500 feels smaller than the Tundra. I think it is the Tundra's shorter windshield and bulging hood that makes it feel larger. The massive sunroof sort of helps by bringing in all the light in the Tundra. The 3500 has a regular sunroof and a regular side shifting rear window. The Tundra (CrewMax) has the rear window that goes down which is cool but I only used it once in over 2 years but it is cool.

The 3500 seems to turn quicker too. I have a tight driveway to get out of and the 3500 seems to handle it better.

It seems to me like the Gen 3 Tundra was made to fill a gap while the actual Tundra was being designed and built.

As for the Tesla, were I in a position to be keeping a second commuter type car, I'd be looking at a used Model 3 Long Range AWD. Even with my absolutely awful luck buying used I would be ok getting a used Tesla. There's no oil to forget to change, no transmission to grind gears in, etc. As long as you look it over and can see it hasn't been trashed, it's pretty impossible to f**k up the mechanics of it. The bonus is that they don't hold resale value very well, so you can get a low mileage used for a hefty discount over new, and with the OTA updates it'll still get upgrades as you go.

 

Buying used is my thought as well. I think we're set on a 3-row MYLR. We know one family with a 5'10" highschooler who loves the 3rd row, even though it's pretty small. Maybe he's a bit crazy, but at least two of our kids are small enough to take advantage of it when the in-laws are in town.

 

I have a similar situation with my EV.

paid $30k in 2018 was on a 30 month lease in Cali and imported to Vancouver. 12k miles on it.

Battery was good for about 100 to 150km range and has a little generator onboard.

We have been using this as a service vehicle for our business and it has been one of the best vehicles we have ever owned!

What I am trying to say is that a used car can work out. We had no idea about how long it would last but it has been so much more than expected.

Today the battery seems as good as the day we got it. The home charger has meant that we never need to charge it away from home.

I would certainly recommend going used to save the huge depreciation in the first year or two.

 

I almost have the mall crawler where I want it after starting the build last year. Few more things to get done but happy overall after a couple shake down runs. Waiting for the tire carrier and trying to decide if I want/need a roof rack on it or not. I am also replacing the grill at some point soon

18”s now on, wearing 265/70/R18 Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV winter tires.

Frankly I think it looks better on 18”s anyway.

 

Oh, I 100% agree! Those are much better looking, but I usually prefer less wheel and more sidewall as a general rule.

Had the floor mats shipped to the warehouse at work and they were supposed to arrive tomorrow. Well, they arrived yesterday instead, but I'm on nights and haven't been able to get over there to pick them up. 1st world problem for sure, but I should be picking them up tomorrow morning when I get off work.

Hoping the next day or two it warms up enough for me to install them. I need a garage.

 

Supposed to be getting properly cold in our AO’s here the end of the week.

 

I guess I should clarify, "warm" is relative and for me that mostly means the sun is out and there isn't wind. At that point I'm in shorts down to about 20° F. Using that as a benchmark, I'm hoping for upper 30s to low 40s without wind so the shade isn't "cold" to me.

Will wait until cold weather goes away.
