Running board brackets

Just recently bought used running boards and noticed all the bolts on the brackets to the running boards are rusted out and need to be replaced. I noticed that there’s no threading or bolts in the running boards. Are there supposed to be threads or nuts on the inside of the running board to attach to? And if not how do the brackets attach. I assume they’re shot as there’s no way of threading in a bolt without drilling a hole over the top to get a nut onto the bolt on the underside.

 

first need to know what you purchased. What is the brand and model of running boards? Maybe post a few pics?

Generally, most steps are all similar, brackets attach to the truck- in factory set threads and the steps/boards sit on the brackets....and yes there are typically threads in the bottom of the steps/boards so they can be bolted to the bracket. It is a very easy install, no drilling or fuss.

Do they have slots for T-bolts? Some of em have slotted bottoms so they can be adjusted fore and aft, then they are tightened down to the bracket with a T-bolts and nuts

 

Those are the running boards plus the mounting holes I am having issues with.

 

Best I can come up with be to bore out the hole in the step and hammer in some threaded inserts.

Are you able to remove the remaining bolt and see what it's screwed into?

Most tubular running boards come with plastic steps. I didn't see any on yours. Like these. https://www.carid.com/lund/4-oval-curved-tube-steps.html

 

Yes but they all come out looking like this or worse regardless of how I have removed them.

 

You need new hardware to attach. Nutserts/rivnuts slip into the holes on bottom of the steps and then bolts matching the threads of the inserts to attach the step to the brackets.

 

I used the rivnuts and they worked perfectly thanks for the help.
