I traded in my 2019 Subaru ascent for a 22 tu dra, and as my first big boy vehicle, I'm pretty happy. But as a technology connoisseur it's leaving me wanting.

The first thing I noticed is that Subaru remote start is absolutely superior to Toyotas, where I can save settings profiles that set the A/C, heated seats, air temp, defrost, face/feet mix etc... and choose the profile during each start.

Oh well I think, it was nice but I really didn't use it other than winter and I can just crank up the auto temp in the winter. COMPLETELY WRONG!!!

This morning was the first frost I've experienced with the car and yesterday I turned on the car, set the defrost on and shut the car off. In the morning I started the remote start and got ready for work. Only when I get to my frosty car did I find out that I have to turn on defrost EVERY time, which is not possible with remote start.

Please someone tell me I'm missing some feature. I'd rather accept my own stupidity than know I just signed up for 10+ years of scrapping Ice off my window and paid a small fortune for the priviledge.

Uuugh, in 2000 my parents bought a sienna that turned out to he a lemon, but only after the warranty expired. Did not live up to the Toyota reputation. We kinda as a family decided never again Toyota, and I became a Ford guy.

Fast forward to now, the off road tech Toyota offers was really attractive, and in the back of my mind I'm thinking, I should really not buy a Toyota, but people still talk about the quality, I can't possibly get something worse than my current car...

Make sure your AUTO function in the head unit is turned OFF for climate control. Set your heat mode to front window (I set mine to blow on the floor as well) and crank the temp and blower up. Turn off truck. When you remote start, those functions will start up again the way you left them. Seat warmers and steering wheel heater will come back on as well if you left them on when you shut the truck off.

So this is at least functional. But the mirror defrost still can't be turned on with remote start.

It's a pretty disappointing thing considering all of the buttons are just software toggles. There's no manufacturing cost to cut

Can you do this through the connected app or whatever?

Pretty much it's just turning the controlls to manual and cranking the heat to high, and setting the mode to feet/defrost before turning the car off.

It's the most basic form of autostart, Toyota should be ashamed. It's Kia quality and I suspect Kia has full featured remote start on a similar trim to a TRD off road adv tech sr5

The one thing I need to research on the "Auto" setting is does it change the air delivery distribution (up, down, windshield, etc.) under any circumstances? Or does it just leave it directed to the last time you changed it manually?

yeah have to turn off the auto setting in the main console for defrost to work manually after turning off the truck the night before. works like a charm up here in ND for the last week.

I live in the Northeast, and yes, if I set the defrost before I turn the truck off it turns on when I remote start. I don’t put it on auto because that is only cabin temp. The only draw back that I notice is that the heated steering wheel and seats only work on my truck when the key is in the truck. The steering wheel and seats are not warm when I get in, but once I restart the truck with the key in it, it heats up very quick

I suspect you are doing something wrong then. You have to set the climate control to defrost/floor vents. The true defrost feature (dedicated button) won't come on when you start the truck.

Heated seats and steering wheel will also stay on.

I can't seem to get the defrost/mirror to work on autostart.

Climate temp set to manual, then:

    1. Top dash vent and leg setting set to a higher temp...ok my front is defrosted
    2. Heated seats set...ok this works
    3. Steering heated set...on a roll still good
    4. Mirror and rear window defrost set......fail.

@ #4 this is the option that won't turn back on even if I set it each time before I turn off the vehicle. Any tips? Or does this feature always require manual intervention?

#4 will never work, it hasnt for a long time in any toyota. didnt work in our 2018 tundra, 2016 tacoma or my 14 4runner (not sure on the 4R since i have mine in the garage mostly)

    speculation incoming ...
its a temp push on switch/setting inherent to the how the switch works and how the bcm has an internal timer to shutoff after 10-15 mins.

I’ve been trying to figure out why AUTO doesn’t seem to work for heating the cab with remote start, and I think I may have stumbled upon the answer in the manual.

I haven’t seen this posted anywhere, so apologies if it’s old news…

In the Air Conditioner section (5) of the manual, it says this under the section describing the AUTO function:

    IMG_2499.jpg

That, to me, suggests that because my truck is not warmed up, the blower fan is not activated in AUTO mode because there’s no warm air to circulate yet. And in the 10 minute remote start window, there may never be enough warm air.

Yup. Fan increases as engine temp increases when in auto mode. My mazda works the same way. Pretty silly if you ask me. I'm in Minnesota and I want the fan on high as soon as there's even Luke warm water in the heater core.
