DIY maintenance versus Toyota Care with engine recall in mind

I wanted to get the thoughts on doing your own maintenance versus the dealership with the engine recall in mind.

I prefer to do it on my own but don't want to risk having potential future engine troubles declined to be covered.

How do others feel about this? Anyone with a new engine that did their own maintenance have experience to share?

This is not meant to discuss the engine failures themselves, there are other threads for that.

    Thanks in advance!

I change my own oil in between their recommended 10k miles. I change every 5k and it’s easy and cheap to do on your own. I don’t think that’ll matter if/when you end up having to replace the engine under recall

Thanks and that was a compromise I had considered too.

It's a recall, the engine will be replaced regardless, but seeing yours is a 24, it's not part of the recall. So, do as you wish. I have a 24 and will not even take mine in for the free services, I do all maintenance myself. I just enter it on the Toyota app. So it all still recorded, & keep my receipts for parts.

Good point, I forgot about the ability to record maintenance on the app.

What? That’s a thing? Where in Toyota app do you see that? I must be blind

Where in the app is this? This is one of my disappointments coming from the Tacoma that had something like 25 service items you can label in the radio.

Man some of you have PTSD or something. The engine recall is only non hybrids build dates 2/23 and older. There’s literally no reason to consider it if you have a 2024 Tundra. In 2029 y’all still gonna be posting about what to do about the recall on your new truck

It's in the "Service" menu under "Make an Appointment". Then go to "Service History". Not very intuitive, but that's where you'll find it.

Don't risk it, just a couple buds and you won't risk any warranty claim in the future.

I got the prepaid maintenance up 85K. I change the oil myself at 5K intervals. The dealer will do their 10K. I take it in every 5K so they can rotate the tires.

I'm clicking "make an appt" and see no "Service History" for me to enter anything. It only shows the dealer to contact...

After you click "make an appointment" give it a second & the rest of menu should pop up like this...Screenshot_20250108_164500_Toyota.jpg

Same. Easier and quicker to DIY for me and skip the dealer. Plus no worries about stripped or cross-threaded skid plate threads.

Depends on if I run out of glue and colored paper
Just document everything like you are your own personal shop and if you want to cover your basis, send fluids away for analysis and you'll have all that documentation too.

My first thought is to close out of the Toyota app and fire it up again. Reboot essentially.
    Then try again.

I don't think you can do it from the app. I record mine through the Toyota Owners portal on their site.

It's there. I found it. I wish you could edit the titles. It's a very "clunky" app and that's putting it mildy. Hiding it in the Schedule an appointment bubble is weird

Thank you so much. I bought this truck from a Toyota dealer, as used, with 15k on odometer. But there was no service records at all on CARFAX, I followed your instructions and now I have a history showing up from all the previous services. Amazing. Not sure who put them there, dealer or previous owner, but I’m glad I know that it was serviced

No problem. Funny you mentioned that. I was going to mention that too as I found much more detailed service description, one says the fuel tube recall was done, but yet it shows in the recall is still active. Even had the dealer I bought the truck from calling me saying they have the parts and want me to bring it in. Might have to call that dealer and ask them what the deal is

Seems like the official fix for it just became available. I also had a dealer call me today about it, going in next week to fix it

What you’re seeing in the Recalls may be the temporary fuel line fix. A tube wrap/protector was placed over suspected spots that might rub through the plastic tubes, while the permanent fix was in the works. I had the permanent fix done before Thanksgiving.

You're probably right as the Recall has an "A" in it and the notation has a "B" in it.
