I've seen it mentioned but is there any insight on when a Gen 3 refresh might happen?
I think it's critical as the new Gen3 type of buyers probably trade more often so there has to be some value content to keep the marque sticky.

It will be interesting to see who the refresh addresses-

    1. Gen 2 low vehicle turnover audience- That would be tow hooks, GVWR and so on.

    2. Early Gen 3 buyers that are coming to term on leases or the end of time they keep a vehicle.

The later is very easy to win by simple product clean up. Fix the snout, add some colors, no whistle in the heater plenum, turn the console into something and for the love of God, rewrite the shitty infotaiment interface. Make it look better and fix the niggles and they have lots of sales headroom.

I thought it was funny how much of that refresh discussion was about tow hooks. LOL. Least of my worries or issues.

typical gen cycle for a refresh is usually 4 years into a gen cycle across the board for toyota. what has happened in the past that sedan/uni-body suv's have followed this path. a typical gen full cycle is suppose to be 7 years but in the last decade or so, toyota has extened the bof cycle out longer to 10+ years but keeping the sedans/unibody line in step with the 7 yr cycle

for bof vehicles, that has not always been true. the 5th gen 4runner was refreshed in 2014 MY (2009 MY was the start) and has not changed since externally, but some features gradually where upgraded (headlights went from halogen to led, software features where added, etc). on the tacoma the 3rd gen refresh was in 2020 MY (think, we got out from our 2016 in 2018 so stopped following the changes). the 2nd gen tacoma started in 2005 MY and went quite a long time for a refresh i think until 2012 MY (the year we bought our tx trd tacoma up here in ND, funny is was a very dark blue like our 23 tundra blueprint). the tundra 2nd gen (2009 to 2021 MY) refresh was in 2018 (or as some call it the 2.5 gen but meh, whatever) when quite a while before any big external changes were done and internal changes were minor across the years.

Really good Toyota context and thanks for laying it out.
My hope is that thee refresh cycles will be compressed at least with SW where possible. Dream world is that they could do some over the air updates but doubtful.

Heard from good source that MY 2026 will bring changes, mostly what Tim reports. Refresh would capture a bunch of the 4-year lease holders who would otherwise jump ship than roll over into the same Tundra with the same irritating quirks. Personally in that very boat: if no changes for 2026, I'm moving on, if refreshed, I'll get another Tundra.

You've got the timing wrong on the 2nd and 2.5 Gen.

    2007-2013 are 2nd Gen.
    2014-2021 are 2.5 Gen.

There were a few changes in 2018.

I am surprised that these 2018+ owners don't claim to have 2.75 gens. LOL.

Worrisome since Toyo did not even get Gen 3.0 right - what makes us think Gen 3.5 will even match it? I would wait until Gen 4 to let Toyo get Gen 3.5 right.

but technically there was never a 2.5 gen (the forum use to call it the 3rd gen), it was all 2nd gen. just the forum took it upon itself to re-classify it as 2.5 gen (from 3rd gen when toyota officially announce the 2022 as the 3rd gen) which i could never understand since it was never an official stance of toyota. they only recognize a gen cycle.

and if you do hard search in the 2.5 gen threads, i use to complain there was never a 2.5 gen, much less so that back then the tundra was a 3rd gen.

edit : by toyota's stance, 2009-2021 is all 2nd gen, no such thing as a 2.5 gen

and since my work doesnt let me visit the wayback machine, here is a screenshot from my phone today (2025-01-06) from 2021 tundras.com snapshot dated 23-jan-2021 showing they use to classify the 2014+ was the 3rd gen.

Fix the rear bumper to something more useable. The GM line up has a better bumper for when the tailgate is down. Also add recovery hooks. Also add ventilation seats in the SR5 trim level as an option. Super wishlist item is 4 auto mode like every other brand.

I don’t think we will get any real updates until Jun 15th 2025.

Don't hold your breath folks, we got the tailgate power up and down, and massaging seats in upper trims for 2025. The nightshade and retro stripes are available too. Maybe a new wheel design or color is all you can expect for the next few years. Remember this is Toyota, not Big 3. They are really not worried about updates holding back buyers on Tundra.

A new wheel design was already "released", it just hasn't shown up online yet.

+1, some foot cutouts would be great. Fix the front end :anonymous:, tailgate, QC issues, add another engine option :crapstorm:. Good to go.
