Agreed, we moved in to a house with one installed and it was a game changer. There are some drawback, like waiting for water to get warm especially in the furthest faucet from the unit, but there are some fixes for it. The other being the yearly draining of the lines for build up and scale. Recently we had to put in a call for sporadic issues with loud noises when its being used and sudden stop of the unit throwing out some codes(22). Dealing with home insurance and the repair companies is a whole other issue. Nerveless, if you find a competent and knowledge tech to worn on these, they are made in Japan and can be fixed and maintained for long time.

Put this electric unit in for a buddy of mine 4 years ago. They love it. It's been problem free.

We'll be going with a gas unit when our regular tank needs replacement.

Has it ever been flushed with chemical to descale? I need to flush my moms that I installed about a year ago.
I want to install one on our house; but I don’t want the combi vent style(those fittings and pipe are super expensive) I want the individual intake and exhaust connections

As far as I know they haven't used a chemical descaler.

The water goes through a softener/ filter before it enters the insta hot unit.

I don't remember what combo they're using though.

The plumbers out here wont install electric ones due to their fail rate with out water. So gas is king and now I wait to make the purchase make sense. I installed a monster commercial one when I bought the house. Luckily I was able to sell the two brand new ones the flipper installed. garbage...

In other news, went to the store to buy a pvc cap for my other septic tank. This cap will hold the time until i tie in the campers to it. Of course, I assumed and bought the wrong cap. The store is an hour away.... so...

Not sure if you have one already but a mixing valve at the tank made a large difference on our available hot water.

Pool got trashed with leaves from storm last week and the filter net on my Polaris was full. Went to pull the unit out of the pool and the pressure hose snapped from age and 59F winter water temp. Fortunately local pool supply had a section of hose and swivels. Gotta say Zodiac Polaris is really proud of those parts - 10 ft hose, 2 swivels and a whip scrubber were $120. Hardest part was putting the hose ends on fittings. Ended up soaking them in hot water to soft the hose enough to fit the barbed fittings. Hose was 20+ years in the pool so I shouldn’t complain. Neighbor had to fix a leak in his pool pump. These unseasonable cold temps are wreaking havoc on us Southerners.

Nothing special, but I got the grass cut and the pool vacuumed for grandma. She has the most beautiful yard, with sunrises right above that big ol pine.

Son (11.9y) complained about it last night. "No hot water the last couple days when I went to take a bath, bath is broke, this sucks!"

I don't think he realizes, daughter (14.3y) has been taking 35 minute showers in a shower that's 20ft from the hot water tank and basically draining all the hot water 10-15 mins before he takes his.

Needless to say, she got the warning last night. Set a timer on your phone for 15mins, and GTFO when that timer goes off. Don't care if you're done, no lollygagging in the shower.

Definitely, they sell some chemical but vinegar is always a good option too.
At work we used this industrial food grade stuff called D-Scale to clean tube in shell heat exchangers for DHW. This stuff was downright scary to watch what it did to calcium/ hard water!!!

Call me Karen but I have zero tolerance for wasteful habits. So I'm right there with you. No one takes a shower longer than 15 minutes in our home. Oldest had some hard lessons on this one a few years back when I would turn her water off mid shower and she would complain that she hadn't even washed herself yet. Guess who follows house rules now though?

Meanwhile my family was in a trailer with like 8 gallons of somewhat warm water (if it was hot outside)
As much as I miss my family, I don't miss that life 1 bit. I pay for 45 mins at a truck stop and you bet your booty I'm using every second of it. LOL.

Shower rooms are like a lil lounge, I like to steam it up and kick it in there. It's not the best, but it could be worse.

That is where I am with this topic. A lot of people don't know what's coming with utility costs. By 2029, our municipal utilities have promised us a 45% increase in your early 2024 bill cost. Can't imagine what for profit companies cost will go up to.

While also blocking off grid opportunities as much as possible. Blows my mind (in my region) that you can pay for solar and provide enough electricity to run your resources, but you are not allowed to play for 100%. And if you do install enough to 100% operate your domicile, you get billed a min usage bill..... like, wtf...

Power and internet are the only things I have left on the grid. I have starlink and love it, but fiber is 100% better. So I am just hoping to get panels in the yard at some point, but I am in no rush as I do not want to tackle that obstacle.

I have heard about this. We do it differently here...but not saying it's better.

We can now do whatever on solar panels. So let's say I build a system 120% of my average use. Some companies give you credit and other just pay you the lowest cost (fraction) of what they would bill for (1.00 vs .01) the same type generation.

Since a lot of utilities are behind the eight ball with EPA guidelines for emissions they are paying whatever to get generation and passing that cost to you. To put the icing on the cake, most utility companies have moved to peak billing to maybe change people's usage habits. Between peak loading hours 5am-8am and 4pm-8pm the rate increases four times the normal route. Well gee...when are most people at home cooking, doing laundry, lights, etc?

There is ways to get around this (peak shaving) by using batteries like a Tesla wall between 4pm-8pm.

And install a sediment trap, so you likely never need to clean the lines again?

It's actually code here, now. Wasn't ~20yrs ago when our house was built, but I've got sediment traps on all the gas appliances now (well, furnaces and tank water heater).

I think he was just pointing out the age of his unit, not specifically that this was his first time flushing it
