Agreed. Even if a human has a trait that predisposes them to anything (we'll call it X) they can over come it through training. As an example, I was a pretty unmotivated child and teen who was raised by a single mom without a father figure in my life. My own father deserted us. After boot my resiliency and motivation had changed dramatically. I high a higher degree of self respect and a higher level of integrity. A leader isn't born a leader. It's a skill they hone.

I have to remind my wife that the things her friends post on Facebook - or even what they text her - are not representative of their real lives.

Our Christmas felt less chaotic to us this year. It obviously wasn't but we've learned to accept it and lowered our expectations.

 

We didnt plan on doing any gifts this year. Longer story, so the short is we spent enough at the local hospital and setting up the new house...

So, we simply wrapped empty boxes for pictures of our newborn. I didnt even think about it and when we sent some out to the family and close friends it was immediately "holy shit is that all for your son?"

It was just an example of something people say isn't their fault because of genes. Remove the comment on addiction from it and just look at the premise. I'm just saying genes affect predisposition, but people can overcome or be influenced by things far more than dogs. People can alter their personality traits through work and effort, or they can be altered due to events in their life. Less so in a dog. A non alpha dog will never become the alpha, but people can learn to be leaders or whatever.

This is where our opinions disagree... My belief is that people can not alter their character traits. But, what they can alter is their behavior...

Choices that you described including choosing to engage w/a potentially addictive vice is essentially a behavior. How fast someone falls down the rabbit hole or can't disengage from that addicitive behavior/lifestyle is rooted back to resiliency.

People who are naturally great leaders are born that way.... period!!!

People can also be 'trained' to perform behaviors that exhibit good/ideal leadership qualities. But, 'born' leaders are just blessed w/the character traits and drive necessary to lead....

'trained' leaders have a threshold where their 'resilience' will break and they will fail in their leadership role.... where that threshold lies is dependent on the quality of training coupled with the person's genetic resiliency...
