Well the ole gal 24/1794 LE is going in for Rear Diff replacement tomorrow, I always change the rear/front differential fluid at on or about 5K miles for the first time (my choice to do so).
Never heard noise or anything. This was on the magnet, SA and Technician at local dealer said bring it in tomorrow, change it (parts on hand).
Dealership said it would be the 4th one they have changed on 3rd Gen.

nope...thats actually very common for a new diff. Every truck I've owned has had some sort of machining debris/chips in it at the first drain (Mostly GM 10b & 14b diffs)

    Factory installed self-destruct device :D
That is why it is important to change the oils in the drivetrain relatively early, to minimize the manufacturing swarf going on to get pulverized into blackness.

exactly...If wear pattern looks good, gears dont whine and locking mechanism (Assuming you have it) works, youre ok. Its gonna take a lot more than a few chips to ruin a diff

Damn, I have never seen anything like what is in those pictures in any differential I have ever owned and changed the fluid on... which is every one of them. But then, I have not yet changed the fluid in my 2023 Tundra. Yikes.

That is what the magnet is for. Machining slag in a differential housing is not uncommon and is usually caught on the magnet first time or two the fluid is changed. If the rear differential is quiet and no other problems, don't worry about it. At least Toyota still puts drain plugs on their differentials making fluid change a breeze.

Had the same crap in the rear diffs of gen2.5 Tundra and gen2 Sequoia. Front diffs were clean, as well as transfer cases.

According to ECGS, the key is proper beak-in for a new or re-manufactured third member ... makes one wonder how Toyota is doing this?

Differentials, blocks and main bearings... this debris problem is spreading. ;-0. Toyota needs to clean up their act.

Manufacturing QC seems to be wanting a bit. Ugh.

I'm thinking about running some Amsoil.

Funny story, I bought a 16 Tacoma new and the rear diff only had about a cup of fluid. Needless to say it grenaded within a few miles from the dealership....fun times.

The thing is... If your diff is quiet, I wouldn't change it. New diffs are 50/50 there are a few people on this forum who had rear diff replaced and new one is more noisy than the old one.

New is quiet, so far so good, but only couple hundred miles on her.
