    The weak point seems to be the actual tailgate. The stiffening brackets are held in place with bubble gum that eventually breaks.
    I slapped in some jb weld to try to hold it together.

    You should know that tailgates, like the hood are not structural. Not meant to take a load. The adhesive you describe to hold
    the stiffening brackets actually comes out of a tube just like bubble gum. It should last a long time, but if there was
    any kind of contaminant on the surface at time of manufacture it doesn't last.

    The little video didn't describe how to release it. Cool idea to lock and load, as they say. But how does the lowering go?

    The video I saw it has a little button on each mechanism so you lightly unload the weight from it and push the button to reset or close it fully and it self resets.
