Very slow throttle response...

Maybe this was discussed before but this morning I was changing lanes on the freeway and no sooner did I signal and start changing lanes than and kid in a POS Civic came screaming up behind me. I stepped on the gas to create some space (I was already going 70) and the truck had almost no response other than a mild acceleration - no downshift, no surge of power...just kinda said, "Nope, not today!". I have definitely experienced the pedal lag from a stop multiple times but never this failure to respond at speed. Is this 3rd gen computer nonsense or something else?

 

It's pretty sporadic. Sometimes it's nice and responsive, other times it leaves you wondering if you hit the right pedal. It's not like regular turbo lag either. I've heard pedal commanders can help - I believe there are a few threads about them.

 

I have the 2022 and it does this. If you have not yet had your first oil change, have the used oil checked for metal. Just saying... it has happened before.

 

I think it has to do with how much you press down the gas pedal. A slight press will get you instant power, but an aggressive press and you'll have to wait for the transmission to downshift.

 

JayDee this is not what he is describing. If you have loss off momentum like CringyDad or myself you know it has nothing to do with how you "push on the pedal".

I appreciate the responses to this, added some clarity to the comments, above:

I'm at 5,500 miles and have changed the oil 3x already. Nothing out of the ordinary in the old oil or filters. And this isn't an issue where the motor is getting fuel but can't spin, it's like the computer is seeing the change of input from the pedal and simply not altering the throttle position.

I did depress the pedal firmly, not to the floor at first but eventually went all the way and the truck only mildly accelerated, gradually, not immediately. And while this all happened inside of 2-3 seconds, the transmission never downshifted.

I am not sure if the mode makes a different (I drive in Normal 100% of the time), but I certainly hope the programming isn't expecting drivers to change modes before needing to quickly accelerate. And I really don't want to have to buy a Pedal Commander or other accessory to "fix" this.

I have experienced the same delayed pedal response on my non-hybrid. It is definitely not turbo lag. Some owners have described it as being SECONDS long and almost causing accidents.

The occasional delay I experience is usually just a split second delay and then when the drivetrain finally responds, it can sometimes be more aggressive/jerky and not as smooth as a normal initial acceleration.

It happens to me mostly at stop signs, when I come up to a four way stop. I stop and pause for a second, and then when I try to accelerate from the quick stop, that's when I will sporadically experience the pedal lag.

My truck is not a hybrid, but I feel like the occasional hesitation is programmed by Toyota for hybrid models. It's as if my drivetrain hesitates, expecting output from the hybrid motor, and when that output isn't there, then I finally get feedback from my motor and acceleration occurs.

I could be way off base with this, but I swear it feels like a programming/software issue. I think my truck is confused that there isn't output from an electric motor.

I have not had the TSB performed.

 

I can't say that I've ever experienced that with my 2024 (non-hybrid). It definitely starts off easier than my old 2005 V8 Tundra as that truck would give you neck jerking acceleration right from the start.
I wonder if your trucks ECU detected pre-detonation and reacted by limiting acceleration? You can read out the number of pre-detonation's detected on each cylinder with an OBDII tool. Last time I checked my truck had a few on a couple cylinders but 0 on most.

I've been running mid-grade fuel (89 octane) for the last several fill-ups and since then (and the transmission software update) it seems the engine has more power and minimal lag.

 

This has also happened to me but not what I was asking about.

I have a 2022 and it doesn't do this. My oil has been changed lots, everything Okee Dokkee. Just saying it isn't every vehicle
