Can the dealership delete error codes

    Hey all!
I’m one of the lucky ones that had their 2022 Tundra go haywire in what seemed to be an issue regarding the recall. It’s been sitting at the dealership for months because of the breakdown. But now they are saying it’s only there because they are waiting for the replacement. Insinuating that I lied and “refused” to drive it in for no reason. Why on earth would I go months driving a sedan instead of a truck that has “no issues.”

Is it possible for the dealership to erase all history of error codes? They are saying there were none in a report we just received. If they did delete them, there has to be record somewhere, correct? They stated “no error codes in system or Rob data.” If not, we have no proof of them aside from the tow truck driver that saw them and wished me good luck because he had towed a few of them.

I thought it was funny that just after the dealership got it, the error codes were gone from our app. Is that standard practice?

    Sorry for the rant/question.

Can you elaborate on what exactly happened to your truck? You mention it went haywire in what seemed to be a recall issue, but that doesn't really provide much detail. Also, depending on the code(s), they may not get stored and clear automatically when the vehicle shuts off.

Also, you are entitled to a loaner under the recall program if you do not feel safe driving the truck until the engine swap.

I'm getting from his post that he did get a loaner, a sedan. I don't work for Toyota nor am I familiar with their loaner program but I don't think they are obliged to give you a loaner that is the same as what you're dropping off. They'd have to have every model as a loaner, not good business for the budget. Drop off a Tundra, get a Corolla. Every loaner I've ever gotten from my dealership has been a sedan. I once requested a truck and they told me they don't have trucks as loaners, best I ever got was a Camry.

I haven't had any codes thrown that I didn't cause myself. Upon doing some wiring I took apart 90% of the dash and reconnected the battery while things were apart, this of course threw about 30 codes due to the system not being able to see the components I unplugged. What I do is I check the codes with my app and before clearing them I download them, your app should have the function. That way I can double check them later to see exactly what they were. It's a little late for it now but anytime you throw a code you should download it for future reference. In this case you would have had the log of the codes thrown as proof in the event they can't duplicate the problem.

I'm saying he doesn't need a reason beyond the current recall to request a loaner. The recall states if you are uncomfortable driving the vehicle under the nature of the recall, you can drop the truck and grab a loaner.

GM dealers used to be required to give you a loaner or rental from the same level of vehicle. If you had an HD, Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon or Cadillac you got one of that group as a loaner. I got Escalades rentals for my 2500 consistently.

The provision of a Corolla for a $70k truck is just chintzy. I can't even fit inside the door of one. At least a Taco which dealers have millions of

LOL, if you can't fit in a Corolla I guess your username explains it all. Again, I can't speak for any other dealer, but mine just doesn't have that policy. Years ago when you got a loaner from my dealer it was from Enterprise rental and you had to sign their rental agreement and either opt in or out for insurance. In the more recent years they haven't done that and I assume they are just pulling cars owned by the dealership. If my dealership had that policy with same level I'd be bringing my truck in for service every week to keep the mileage down.

I understand we were lucky to get a loaner. I can fit in a Camry (I’m a she). My issue is that I had the codes show up while driving. First it was reduced engine power. Shut it off. Checked things out. Then after driving home in horrific rain (so going very low speed) I stopped to drop a family member off. Turned it back on and shortly after it had the check engine light, reduced power, and codes for the brakes and collision systems malfunctioning. I could hardly get it up my driveway because it was in reduced power mode.

So I spoke with advocacy and then the dealership. They agreed that it would be towed in and we would get a loaner to be checked out because it wasn’t exactly safe to drive on a major highway without being checked.

Shortly after being dropped off at the dealership all of the codes disappear. I wish we had downloaded them but it’s a bit too late. I think I got my question answered so thank you to those of you who did.

The way it was handled is just upsetting because they say this whole time nothing was wrong with it, that it’s not showing any codes. Not actively malfunctioning at all much less in any way that is related to the recall. So why did they not tell us and give it back? We missed an entire camping season because we did not have it.

I would much prefer someone who needed an engine sooner have theirs in line to be getting fixed. Or have a much needed rental. It seems very odd that it was in for a service (and to be checked for the weird “noise/feeling.” Then five days later we had this issue. But after Toyota gets it, it was magically fine (but what would we know because they kept it) and has no codes.

The tow truck driver experienced the same when getting it. Said he had seen it happening in a few.

Who knows. I’m sorry to everyone dealing with this recall issue.

Exactly, and I only wanted the vehicle towed in to be checked/fixed. Whatever. I would have been more than happy to take our truck back and wait in line like everyone else.

We have only ever had Toyotas. Hence the name. My day to day vehicle is a RAV. And still I love my vehicle. I just don’t love the dealership that the Tundra came from so much anymore. The tow truck driver also warned me about their practices and said we could have had it towed to another dealership

The same dealership has been under fire for a few things (I just learned of them since researching after all of this) and is having to pay our settlements.
