Man o man. My son driving back to school today and just hit a deer in middle of West Texas, glad he is OK which is the most important part. Thanks GOD and we're so fortunate for that. Hugs your kids more often guys. He still got 3 hours left to drive. Nothing touching the tires. loose metals or parts, and no liquids or noises in the engine. Can't open the engine hood but he checked from bellow. Looks all clear, I hope. Deer didn't make and I am sure the truck repair will be just fine. Is just metal and insurance, who cares.

Gotta teach them to drive thru it, no sudden turns or brake hard…straight ahead and slow steadily …duck if needed

Glad he is OK (thank God)

Few years ago a dad I know was letting his teenage daughter drive van back from trip, whole fam in there, hit deer, hard swerve, rolled, 2 had to be lifeflighted, her father sadly died

Thanks. Yeah Tundy did save the day. Can you imagine a small sedan hitting that deer at that speed? Yes insurance covers it all I guess, my deductible is $500. I already put in a claim tonight.

I agree thank GOD your son is OK, metal and plastic only cost money. My son driving in Humboldt (where we all live), hit a deer he said it was foggy and the deer just came out of nowhere. Thank GOD he didn't have time to react just let off the gas doing 60 mph, the deer went right under the truck (Gen 1 Tundra) and messed up the plastic just under the bumper. Yup, do not swerve just drive thru it and remain straight and safe.

Craigslist that bumper, idk about your area but they are a dime a dozen around here. Idk about 2nd Gen but the plastics under the headlights for my 2018 was like $30 a piece from Toyota. You might be able to fix that for much less than your $500 deductible

Interesting.... read some reviews and it seems like you don't hear anything in your vehicle. At that price point it's kinda hard not to try it. The single pair is 7.50 and the 3 pair is 9.99. Added this to my wishlist and will buy the 3 pack next time I place an Amazon order. Have had more close calls with deer this year then any other time in my life.

Glad he’s okay! Definitely time to get some more lights on there to get a further view of the road before anything happens. Halogens are no bueno either.

This city boy doesn’t know much about wildlife but I did just have a trip to MI where there was a ton of deer. The rental had the horns on the front and we had a ton of deer pop their heads up and look at us but none to suddenly dart into the road. However our rental was a 13 passenger van so I’m sure that had its own noises going down the road. Like you said tho it can’t hurt anything to try.

It is my second Tundra, my older one. He drives it for now so I guess that makes it his truck now. But is just metal and plastic, shit can be repaired so I am not even stressing about it.

I talked to a guy years ago that hit a deer. He said he even had those deer whistles on his truck. They didn’t help. I heard other similar stories about the deer whistle. A deer expert on a u tube video I watched the other day about deer, mentioned the deer whistles is a scam. And he said a lot of people don’t install them correctly to get the whistle noise. I think if they did work the insurance companies would have them installed from factory to lower the claims. If you think it’ll give you a little comfort that it’ll warn deer ahead of time, try them. They might work.

Well damn, just saw the pictures.
Your son is good, missed most of the critical parts on the truck, which is amazing thinking about it....
Deer on the other hand, oh deer..... nvm....

Glad your boy is okay, that's all that REALLY matters here.

I bought the '00 Tundra I had before this one from my FIL and he had the little whistle things on his bull bar, dunno if they helped or not.

They lived in TX hill country outside San Antonio down a few miles of back road, dawn or dusk was a scary time to drive that road. Deer everywhere, they'd come right up to the road and usually stop, but not always.

First of all, so glad that everyone is ok. The damage doesn’t look too bad all things considered.

I have always put the deer whistles on my cars…..if they don’t work I am only out $10. If they do, it may have prevented thousands of dollars worth of insurance claims / out of pocket expenses. I will roll the dice and continue to use them.

Where whistles, or where'd they live?

That pic is horrible, but the deer whistles are on the very outsides of the flat bar my coffee cup is sitting on, just inside the uprights.

In-Laws lived in Boerne. FIL put corn out for the deer, and they'd come every morning and evening.

Started with a couple that were really shy, and before long he had a herd of 25-30 that would follow him around while he poured out the corn. They not only ate the corn, but pretty much EVERYTHING else that didn't have chicken wire around it.

Glad you son is OK, John . As @smokint said, perfect excuse for an upgrade to an offroad bumper :D

Although it goes against human nature, I was taught from my time driving in Maine to smash the skinny pedal right before impact (and aim for rear legs if possible). Object being to get the nose of the vehicle as high as possible so the Moose would flip over the windshield and onto roof.

Yeah, bad lighting. To be fair, the pic was actually of the "SD SRF" plates I had just gotten so I wasn't highlighting the whistles. (Not a lotta' deer in my urban jungle of San Diego)
