ok need advice on painting wheels, I painted my tss wheels gloss black and i went a little too heavy on the spray, now I have runs and orange peel... I sanded down using a scotch final stripping pad but still see some on the runs and heavy spots, what grit sand paper should i use to smooth them back out again to be able to respray them? i have practiced a little on another rim and know how to get the finish I'm looking for now...

Have you considered taking them to a local shop to have them media blasted? Powder coaters usually offer this.

That service isn't expensive, typically less than $100 for a set of wheels. That would absolutely get rid of any messed up paint.

Not sure about sandblasting but my local powder coater wants $1K to do my 10-year-old faded TSS wheels.
I'll buy new wheels for that much money..:eek2:
But so far I'm just living with the faded old wheels...

I'm spraying mine gloss black maybe I can sell them and use the money to get the rims I really want so far, they look pretty good they aint perfect but they look pretty good I'll try to post pics when I'm done maybe i can inspire you to tackle it and spray yours as well luckily mine aren't on the truck ore on rims so its a little easier to spray

I did a polish on my wheels years ago and they looked great.

I did another polish a few months ago and they look like shit..:eek2:
In my 10 years of owning this truck I haven't found one aftermarket wheel I like.

Maybe next tire change if I can find some TRD Pro wheels I'll go for it..
I'll be going from 20" tires to 18s..

Same question. I just picked up some black rims. They are ind decent shape but could use a polish.

I used Flitz polish and a buffer ball on a drill on the first polish.
As well as a lot of elbow grease to get in the crevices.

For the second one I used Chemical Guys 38.
But they are 10 years old now..

Another question. When you say elbow grease, what did you use for an applicator, rag? Also, did you put a sealant on after?

Just rags, a lot of rags.
I probably put CG Jet Seal on them on the first polish.
I don't remember, that was back in 2021..

Note: I used Amazon.com: CERAKOTE® Ceramic Trim Coat Kit - Quick Plastic Trim Restorer - Ceramic Coating Black Trim Restoration to Last Over 200 Washes – A Ceramic Coating, Not a Dressing : Automotive
    on my plastic center caps.

    They look brand new..
The wheels not so much on my last wheel polish...

    [IMG][IMG]

    Did the bumper plastic too.
    It's holding up very well..
It took a couple of boxes and you need to exactly follow the instructions.

Can be tricky on irregular shaped surface but might be able to use 150 or 220 on a small block, feather to 400 then primer and topcoat. They make nib files and razor blocks too but for this project maybe us a little wooden block or a semi flexible pad with sandpaper.

I've used the Cerakote on several things. It looks great, but it doesn't last for 200 washes like it says on the box.

Your powdercoater didn't want the job so he quoted it to the moon. Wheels are a PITA to powdercoat, but not $1k pain.
Should be closer to half that.

On a different note: Your S&W polished up nice!

    Thank you..
Their quote was to remove the wheels, tires, and powder coat them, and put it all back together.

I would lose the milling on the wheel as well.

For a little more than $1K surely I could find some new wheels with a letter offset than these stock wheels....:eek2::thumbsup:

I completly understand, sandblasting was nice but it also caused me to use a lot of primer more than i anticipated. I have some runs and some small specks and i even made a big booth. Eventually my wife and friend came to look at them and said all these imperfections that i see no one else will ever see and that im just being to picky. i live on a dirt road so they will be dirty in a day lol i have one more small sand and recoat and then im done lol

For $650 you're not too far from buying new.
