How about being in your 1st gen? Does that qualify? Heading down into Death Valley.

I don't want to be too rough here, but no, it doesn't qualify. We're here because we're fanatical about Tundras and that's what we want to see. The scenic background is just a bonus.

I haven't been around these parts in a while but damn you guys have some great pictures. Here's a recent one I took up in a little mountain town. Let's see who could recognize the area without a Google search ;)

I feel like I should know this, but I'm drawing a blank.

Ha! I do know where this is. I actually stopped at the June Lake Junction store, too. Beautiful area.

Yes, I knew I knew it, but it took me a bit to remember. It was bugging me because I knew I knew. I was there last May. I can understand why it's becoming a favorite.

And I have to correct myself. It was May of '23. Time flies and my mind is going. It was interesting to see remnants of snow on the ground in mid-May, too.

Yeah that previous winter you were there is when they got a ton of snow up there. May and June are my favorite times to visit, although we just up this past fall and the colors were amazing.

Clay bar and wax made the paint on my truck look and feel 10 years younger. 100% recommend. The clay barring was the real key to getting it shiny and smooth. Unbelievable amount of crud and dirt and crap came out of the paint.

Yup, just gotta make sure you never let the claybar touch the ground. You get a single piece of sand in the bar and your paint is gonna be FUBAR.

Is they're a definitive guide on how to do this on your own? Or should I hire a professional?

I’ve never heard of having a pro do claybar. It’s like a pile of silly putty that’s mildly abrasive. You swirl it over your paint with water. It removes all wax and contaminants. You polish the paint or rewax after.

This youtube video is a good example of how to do the actual clay bar part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7qZJOnhZU8 It's really pretty straightforward, just takes a bit of time.

Wash the truck really good before you clay bar. Use the "two bucket method", if you don't know what it is, look it up. I use CarPro Reset as my soap, as it'll remove and waxes, greases, or oils that are on the paint. Adam's Strip Wash works well too. This isn't a normal wash soap- it's intended to be used before waxing/polishing/etc. Dry off the truck really good, and use filtered water if you can. The minerals and metals in your water will create water spots which just makes more work for the clay bar.

After the truck is washed and dried, you can use the clay. Get something from a name brand. Mothers, Meguairs, Griots, etc. I've had nothing but bad luck with Chemical Guys products, but some people say they work. I used Meguairs "mild" compound. Many clays come in different hardnesses, which in turn removes more or less contaminants. However, even with a lubricant on the clay, you're essentially barely scratching the surface of the clearcoat. If you don't want to polish your truck, just wax it, use a "light" or "medium" clay. My truck has been parked outside under trees for it's entire life, and the medium clay was more than enough. If you use too hard a compound, or clay bar too much, you'll end up scratching the clear coat, which wax won't fix.

Then once you've clay bar'd the whole truck, you can rise it off with a hose to remove any residue from the clay or the soapy water that was used as lubricant. Dry it off real good to prevent water spots. Then you can wax. Again, something from a name brand won't do you wrong here. I've used Adam's Graphene Wax and Griot's Garage Ceramic Wax before. Both work great and are relatively inexpensive options.

This process probably took me 2-3 hours on my truck, including the initial wash, clay, rinse, and wax. I also have a huge bedcover that I had to clay/wax as well, so it might not take you as long. Don't separate these steps- do them all at once to prevent the paint getting contaminated before clay or wax. Let me know if you're gonna do it or if you have a question.
