I wonder why we haven’t seen carbon rims make their way to trucks?
Carbon Revolution rims, which come on high end OEM sports cars is supposedly working on them.

the company claims a weight saving of 15lbs per wheel or 40%

    I’m guessing a cost saving of 4-5mpg.

Why have we not seen an influx into this product for trucks?

If the weight savings are as great as you posted I think alot of people including myself would be intrested, why they are not making them for our trucks is a good question, to expensive? Not strong enough? Maybe something else?

I would opine a few reasons:

    - High Cost
    - Low market size
    - Less durable in ways
    - Truck wheels see different kinds of abuse than high end sports cars
    - Carbon wheels are typically a maintenance item; they wear out at lower milage than aluminum and have to replaced. Technically cast aluminum wheels are also maintenance items, but they don't delaminate and explode - just leak. And I think the million mile tundra went the entire distance on factory wheels.
    - Sports cars don't typically see dirt, grime, mud, road junk like the quintessential american pickup. Dirt abrades and degrades the carbon fiber. They can be coated, but it affects the performance and weight.
    - AFAIK, mounting tires on carbon wheels takes special equipment; who's gonna do that and how much more does it cost? I'm guessing not $18-22 a tire.

But with all the negative-nancy-nonsense aside, that would be pretty slick to see some carbon wheels for the tundra...

Makes about as much sense as SEMA sized rims :rasta:

I wouldn’t use them off road, it would be for trucks with majority city/hwy driving….for example, capstone model.

cost and strength.....to make them to withstand truck stuff, heavy loads, towing, offroad...they would cost too much for most people. Not sure if you have ever seen a picture or video of a carbon fiber wheel failure but they are brittle and basically disintegrate with an impact or loads beyond their capability. Probably better off saying on street cars, motorcycles and bikes that dont see load and use of todays trucks.

    from Carbon revolution website:
    https://www.carbonrev.com/wheels/benefits/

    Strength
Modern vehicles are heavy, particularly EVs which carry a large number of batteries.

This added weight must be borne by the vehicle’s wheels. Carbon fibre reinforced polymers can be developed to be much stronger than aluminium, allowing Carbon Revolution to make lightweight wheels which have a load rating that meets any OEM requirement, whether it be for a car, SUV, truck or even aerospace applications.

I know all this. Yes they can be strong but do not do well with hits or side angle loads, things you would encounter with a 4wd truck doing truck stuff. They are brittle so can crack and dont even get me started about what happens if you overtighten the lugs. Their main benefit is weight. Since you are researching, google carbon fiber wheel failure.....you will have weeks worth of material and pictures to go over.

But you want carbon wheels spend the coin and get them!
