    Hello All,

I have tried to do a little bit of searching to see if anyone has done this before but had no luck finding anything on this. I have a 2013 Crewmax with a back up camera that appears on my rear view mirror. I am looking into a aftermarket head unit for my truck and I want to get one that I could possibly have my back up camera appear on the unit not just the rear view mirror. Does anyone have any experience with this or know someone who has successfully done this mod?

Yeah, I have a Kenwood Headunit that I routed an OEM camera to. My headunit has the RCA jack input for the camera, and I also had to tie into the reverse light circuit on the reverse light. I recently replaced the tailgate handle and camera because the original OEM camera cord was a composite video cord, which won't easily mate with an RCA jack. I made sure to buy one with an RCA cord because I knew the Kenwood required an RCA input. I'm sure some headunits have composite video input that mates with the OEM camera, it just that mine didn't.

I know this is an old thread but also in the same predicament. Seems like all the harnesses sold are for the jbl units that display the backup cam on the head unit which makes sense because it would have a plug for the headunit. Did you happen to find a solution that doesn't involve replacing the oem camera? If not, how involved is replacing the oem camera?

    Hey There

I know this is a really old thread. I just wanted to see if you figured it out as far as the wiring of your backup camera in the rear view mirror and making it go to your headunit? I'm now looking into swapping out my headunit and my back up camera is in my rear view mirror. Thanks for responding.

Check out this video: How to move your factory Toyota Mirror Camera to your new radio (youtube.com)

It's about a Tacoma but the premise is the same. Also check out this thread: All Years Complete Audio System Wiring Diagrams | Toyota Tundra Forum (tundras.com)

Click on your year to open a PDF of the wiring diagram for the audio system which includes the mirror, just have to zoom in when you open it. The mirror wiring for 2013 should look like this:

I have a 2011 with oem backup cam in rearview mirror. I installed a Kenwood dmx-709s and transferred the video to the HU but issue I am having now is the oem tailgate camera looses power after like 1 min no matter what I do. turn truck off and back on and BU cam works again for 1 minute.

fyi I believe 2010-2012 only uses the below wires for video

for wiring I used the reverse blue wire in passenger kick, then for video feed I used the grey wire (camera video-) and red wire (camera video) from the plugs in the A-pillar on drivers side. I pinned them out from the the plug by the mirror. did I do something wrong or do I have a bad oem camera?

I'm not positive but it may be a voltage issue. I belive there are 6 volt and 12 volt cameras.....possibly the same with the head unit inputs.

so I do understand that but I'm still using the oem camera and wiring that came with my truck. I only transferred the video signal via yellow rca plug into new Kenwood HU and by doing that voltage shouldn't be an issue.

the video works but only for 1 minute after I start the truck

UPDATE: I tried deleting the video from the rearview mirror as it has a display too because it was a little distracting for me but once I hooked the wires back up the cameras stay on, I guess the Body Control Module is searching for a camera or 12v load and if it doesn't see it then it stops power output to that source is my best guess

2010-2012 in the drivers a-pillar there are 2 plugs in the plug closest to the windshield there is a green wire that can be used for reverse signal (double check will DMM to verify) with ignition on put vehicle into reverse and then back to neutral and you should see 12v come on and off, in plug next to the plug with green wire there will be a grey and red wire next to each other. the red wire is camera video+ which is center pin on rca, the grey wire is camera video- which is the shielded outer wire on rca. hope this helps for anyone with

    Hi there!
    Thanks for posting this!
Do you by any chance remember which red/gray wire did yo use to get the feed from the rear camera? There is 2 pairs in the connector
    Thanks!

Not sure what year your truck is, if you don't understand the wiring diagram let me know.
These diagrams are from a 2012.

The simple answer is the one closest to the blank pins, or in the middle or the connector.

The connector in your pic (in the pillar) is KW1.

In your truck, it has 2 purposes.
    1. the camera to the mirror
    2. the Bluetooth mic to the radio
Unfortunately, they made these wires the same colors.

In your pic the top row, the one closest to you is 1 - 11
    The bottom row is 12 - 22

    upload_2025-2-10_13-51-32.png

    Each pin has a number.
There are no wires in pins 1-3, 4 -7 is your camera, 8 - 11 and 13 is your mic.

The number next to each wire in the KW1 diagram is the number of the pin connector.
    Pin 4 Black - camera CB+
    Pin 5 White - CGND
    Pin 6 Red - CV+
    Pin 7 Grey - CV-

The mic, from the mic to the connector then to the HU with different color wiring.
    Pin 8 Grey
    Pin 9 Red
    Pin 10 White
    Pin 11 Grey
    Pin 13 Lime green

Awesome! That's correct, my truck is also 2012 and it is the upper pair near the pail green wire.
    Thank you so much!
