1st Gen camper shell buying info

I just checked mine as well. ARE MX mid high rise topper 38lb struts.

window stays open if I'm hauling anything long. Wind will push it down to level with the topper, but it won't close. Even if I'm on the freeway it doesn't close.

 

Mine are 45lb.

Made me curious so I looked mine up, same here 45lb on hi-rise cap

 

Any of y'all carpet your inside of cap yourself? Or any other variation of lining the inside of the cap?

 

PO did mine. Great job on the roof. Piss poor job on the side walls. Same method required for headliner. 3M Super 77 or my fave 08090 Super Yellow. You’ll start from center, spray a strip of the carpet, and a matching strip of the cap roof. Let set for 10min. Install the two sprayed sides together and rub center out to bond. Fold one half over, spray your next section and the cap where it’ll bond, let flash 10min, work center outward, stretching a tiny bit as you go. Obviously it’d be easier to do this with the cap off and upside down on a moving blanket so you can work with gravity in your favor.

 

What is yours lined with? Carpet? Is it like the carpet used on sub boxes?

 

What is there to gain from having carpet lining on the cap? Mine doesn't have any but other than looks what good would it do me?

 

I imagine it would help insulate and sound deaden some.

 

You also wouldn’t accidentally rake your bald head across the scratchy ass raw fiberglass and have somewhere to stick cool Velcro patches.

 

If you sleep back there, it helps hold the condensation, so it doesn’t drip on your, previously mentioned, bald head.

 

All good points, I suppose it could be good if you were using it to sleep in quite a bit.

 

I use 39s on my 100R. Struts will be pretty universal, measure your compressed length and the extended length and find something with the same specs. Don't use a longer compressed length than what is currently installed.

Condensation, as previously mentioned.

You can also stick a velcro cargo net on the ceiling. Handy for storing things like towels up there. I also stick a water bottle in one while I'm sleeping back there.

I mean, that's a tricky question. Because I typically used higher-nap carpet on speaker boxes that's more akin to your cab floor carpet. What's on my camper shell ceiling is more akin to what you'll find in bass boats. Maybe the're the same? I dunno. Search for "underfelt" carpet, it's low-pile.

 

I've never installed carpet on one but it is definitely low-pile. A search on Amazon produces underfelt carpet as an option as you mention. Looking at leers website they claim their carpet is a nylon product, likely similar to what bedrug is made up of. I think they many be a polypropylene base product through IIRC.

insulation and condensation collection. Even if you aren't sleeping back there the carpet will help keep your bed space cooler on hot summer days. I guess it depends on what you're storing there and your overall use if that matters to you though.

I can just about fit 2 fingers. But i like it tight, until it rattles rearward.

3 fingers at the notch for the 3rd brake light.

 

Should check how well the glass lines up with the tailgate and it's latches as well I would think.

 

That's my main concern. Probably going to try that ratchet strap idea too

With my Leer, there's a very clear body line it follows, all you need to do is line it up. It’s possible other manufactures weren’t as design-oriented as Leer was though. I’ve been nothing but overjoyed with the fermenting the neeer Leer 100 series shells on our 1st gen trucks…

 

Yes, this is the limiting factor, there is no room to go back or forward, the tailgate decides for you.
One other point to take into consideration... it's not unusual for tailgates to get bowed a little from loading heavy objects. When that happens it's a real pain to lock rear windows that only have one handle in the middle. It takes two people because you have to bow the glass a little to make it fit. In such a case you could just mount the topper a little farther back.

 

I've got 8 clamps at my disposal. Figure I'll use 6.

 

Mine is single handle and I usually have to give one side a push when latching but not very hard so I just leave it be.

 

I should add to this: The fitment you see, I have approximately one fingertip's separation at the back/corner/sides of the cap, and it lines up perfect with the body line.

So I guess I'd say proper fitment is having about a pencil with to a finger width at the rear corner.

Could probably go a smidge forward, but the hatch is already touching the tailgate in the middle.
