We've all seen the cracked mega thread, curious how many are still rolling in 3rd gen original seat panels ?

I'm at 11k miles in 13 months and no cracks or formations of one yet.

It’s all about how you get out of your truck. If you slide your a$$ out of the seat and drop down to get out, you’re gonna break that panel quickly. If you lift yourself out, you will never have the problem. I’m not defending Toyota or the cr@ppy design at all, just saying…

Happened in my 2005 once, my 2013 three times, and my 2022 at 6k miles. Now at 23k with no recurrence but I have to keep reminding myself not to put any weight on that trim panel.

I’m 6’4”, 215 lbs. but they will break even on smaller people if they aren’t diligent.

    i think this has merit , I’m
    Not a small dude , not huge either , 6’3”. 285

I have the oem power running boards so I think that makes a big difference as you aren’t sliding out to reach them

Highest time and milage so far !! Give us your secrets please !

...as far as stats' 6'1 and 240 in shape and use steps to lift in/out so maybe this helps?? ... but never cracked a side panel in 2.5 gen with no steps.

I'm not sure when but Toyota updated the part with different mounting points and stronger plastic. So those that had the cracked panel were likely 2022 builds.

I had mine replaced when my '22 had 6k miles and got the new part back then, no problems since!

& the interior is in like new condition

Note- I am very careful getting in & out of the truck, no stepping on the threshold or kicking the door panel! Notice the microfiber cloth on the floor were I first step in with my right foot, then I grab the steering wheel & follow up with a nice pull/jump onto the seat avoiding the plastic trim that breaks

I'm at about 20 months and 40k with no cracks. It is all how you get into it. My old 08 cracked twice, then I got running boards and it never happened again. My 23 has had running boards from day one and I have never slid out of the seat or put much weight on that panel. When you have the leg-destroying TRD running boards you learn quickly to get in and out a certain way, which in turn keeps pressure off the seat panel.

I didn't make it passed the first weekend which was about 1,000 miles. Is there an aftermarket one that is more durable available?

Just noted that we step in and out from the running boards. If we were sliding out to the ground that would put a lot more pressure on the trim piece. May be why no issue here.

You shouldn't need running boards to prevent the seat panel from cracking. Personally, I dislike the looks of running boards, and they tend to get beat up on the trails I run, anyway. My previous 2008 and 2015 Tundras didn't have running boards, and the seat panels never cracked on those 2 trucks. It did crack on my 2023, even though I was consciously trying to avoid putting my full weight on the side of the seat from the time it was new.

Bottom line is, it's a cheap under-designed/engineered part. I'm also skeptical about the claims that Toyota re-designed it to make it stronger. When my cracked panel gets swapped out, I'm going to request to see both the new and old panels side by side. I post pics of what I find.

There is another thread regarding broken panels. It contains photos of the original panel, and the new panel after the part being "reinforced" by Toyota.

Even with the beefier panel, they are still being reported as breaking, but at a slower rate.

Agree that the engineering of the seat and panel still leaves much to be desired.
