Yeah, that's Merus dust. I roll with the windows down so when I get hung up and spin, it makes a shit ton of dust. My pass floor carpet is orange now. I need to do another deep clean soon wasn't expecting her to have to take my truck. Also, @shifty` loves it when you just wipe the dust off the important shit.

 

Some of the guys up here roll back through town with 1-2in of mud still on... I get it. It's like a big ass banner that says "We had fun".
I was surprised how red that dirt was, ours is all doo doo brown, or beach sand.

 

5100s

 

Do you like em?

I'm pretty seriously considering 6112s right now because my front springs are so shot. Just unsure if I should get 5100s, 5160s, or leave the 4600s until I can more comfortably purchase a 5100/5160.

 

What do you guys think? Does it look close to 1000 dollar rack?

 

I like them just fine. They were smoother with OEM leaf packs.

5100 vs. 5160, you need to ask yourself: Do you really need to pay more to have a remote reservoir? If not, just do the 5100s.

Note, if you're lifted, 5100 in rear may be a diff't part number, I can't remember.

 

Rear 5100s are good for up to 1” of lift.

Got RT111 wheels cleaned up. Wheel weights off, adhesive wiped out, TPMS out, ready to swap the Mickeys and Denso TOMS sensors over one weekday next week.

If anyone is curious, it would appear whatever brand of sensors these are (2nd pic) they’re compatible with the 1GT TPMS system. Didn’t realize how potato-quality the pic is, but I’m too lazy to go back to the shop and shoot another pic.

 

I haven't been following along. Did you end up going back to the 275/70/17's? Are you selling the silver wheels?

 

275 Mickeys are going on the silver wheels. Selling the 285 Wildpeaks I bought used, hopefully for the same $$$ I paid or maybe more. Mulling over whether to sell the gold Methods, may have someone interested. Will ultimately install Bilstein 6112s, drop it another 3/4” or 1” in front, ditch the Toytecs.

The truck rides so much better and quieter with the Mickeys back on. I didn’t realize how f’n noisy those Wildpeaks were. It’s night and day. Sounded like my bearings were dying a slow death before, going back to the Mickeys it’s like a whole different truck. I can’t wait to see how much better it feels on-road with the 6112s. And if it sucks, I’ll throw the Toytecs back on. But first I needed to get my wheel situation sorted, and I can start pivoting toward getting the 6112s on. Still need to assemble.

It’s so insanely nice to no longer rub at all. My wheel well liner is totally fucked at the pinchwelds, both sides of the truck. Gone. The 285s blasted it to shreds.

 

You must have been rubbing pretty hard to do that much damage so fast. I've had 285's since 2019 and haven't done that. Probably due to SPC uppers and alignment. I am wondering if I'll rub when I buy new tires in the same size.

 

I've got SPC uppers too, my primary difference is I'm probably not rocking quite as much caster via the lower adjusters as you are, and our offset/backspace numbers are diff't between your SCS wheels and the various wheels I've been rocking.

But yes, at the lower corner of my fender liner, the tire was grabbing that corner hard enough and pushing it against the pinch weld hard enough while rubbing that it ate right thru, and now the liner is ton open over the pinch weld. If you push in on the liner, the pinch weld comes poking thru. No biggie, just an OCD annoyance for me.

Hindsight 20/20, knowing what I'll probably spend to replace those liners (I'll probably just repair), I should've just gone to the offroad shop an hour north of me that isn't as strict with (and understands more conceptually) and paid for them to re-align. I was being hardheaded because I just paind once to have a self-proclaimed "Toyota overlanding" shop (LexTechs in Johns Creek) align, then realign me, their lead tech refused to give me more caster, I felt like grilled me about "why" I wanted more caster when I asked for realign, took the truck and threw it on the rack, made some changes, but didn't give me any new numbers after so I knew what (if anything) was changed. I mean, I know something changed related to caster because I wasn't rubbing as much, but I have no clue how much.

I'll probably still use those guys for other service in the future. But no way I'm letting them do wheels/tires/alignment anymore. The whole situation left me with a bad taste, I can still visualize the conversation in my head, asking to get closer to 2.5 - 3.0 on caster, and being met with a "WTF?!" look, then the grilling about "why" began.

Anyway, I'll probably order fender liners during the next sale for the hell of it, then address the pinch weld while I've got the torn ones out (reduceit, prime it, paint it). You know, just in case I or someone else decides to oversize in the future. But as long as I'm running the 275s, I'm hoping I won't rub any more. I can't imagine going from a 17x8.5 -> 17x9 wheel will make much difference, but my original RACELINE wheels were 17x9 and rubbed, so who the hell knows.

 

Got the okay from my brother to remove the aftermarket tint from the driver and passenger windows of the 02 AC. It was really dark and getting worn, which made night visibility a problem. Having never done this before, I found the following video helpful. (Who knew that simple Windex was great at removing adhesive from glass? I always used 3M Adhesive remover.)

With a lot of patience and a heat gun, I was able to remove the tint in a single piece leaving only minimal residue, mainly near the edges where I got it started with a razor blade.

They always made me do the tint removals at the shop when I was younger, it's shit work. Especially on rear windows with a defroster grid. The tint that was on there must've been shit brand if it came off that easy, with minimal residue.

It really helps to tuck a towel into the lower inside edge, between the rubber sweep and glass. Prevents any sticky residue from running down into the door, gumming up tracks/gears, etc.

Note on the peeling-to-chrome trim pieces: I know a lot of people are plastidipping those after chipping away the paint, but I've seen some really cool vinyl wrap jobs done, including one recent one I posted a pic of where they used vinyl faux-carbon wrap.

 

It was my first time, so I can't speak to the quality of this tint. But I was REALLY patient and made heavy use of the heat gun i.e. each side took me an hour. I hadn't thought about wrapping the peeling trim, but I have thought about wrapping the hood where the paint has come off and it's down to bare metal. Need to do some prep work to stabilize the metal (maybe sanding and a coat of primer) and then find a wrap he can live with.

I was looking at some Toyota 17" wheels on craigslist earlier, $150 for silver OEM wheels, then I started comparing tire sizes as I'm pretty happy with the size of my 265/75/R16s, and the next thing I know I'm looking at 275s and trying to remember what you had posted about tire rub and then I'm looking at UCAs. I need to be happy with my starfish and keep rocking them until I eventually get around to ditching my KYBs for some Fox shocks(fucking brand loyalty is expensive).
