Rough cold start on 2015 5.7

The dealer was for sure being shifty. I told him all the issues and what I thought it was. Then they started in on it could be this could be that stuff that would cost me money cause I'm out of warranty. I waited till the end to show him the tsb. Their response...."where'd you get that?" So yes they were being shifty to me as well

I heard that you can convert flex fuel to standard through updates and that it is necessary when you go supercharger

I should rephrase that. I was under the understanding that Computer remapping and the like is what needed to be done to solve the flex fuel issue ,nothing physical

They just did an update on my ecm and that fixed the problem. The computer was thinking that I was ruining on high levels of alcohol

I have a 2016 FFV 5.7L V8 4x4 crewmax. I feel the need to notify the public that my car was having really really bad rough starts in the morning - didn’t matter if weather was cold or warm - first start of the day always sounded like the engine was choking. I googled online and found this site and many other message boards about the Alcohol Density Calculation problems and the need to “reflash” the ECM (see Toyota Service Bulletin T-SB-0058-13).
I took the truck in to the dealer yesterday, they did a cold start this morning after it sat in the lot overnight, and concluded it had this problem that is specific to FFV Tundra engines.
The service advisor said that Toyota just came out with a new TSB a few days ago updating the old TSB so that it now covers the fuel pump and the “reflashing” of the ECM, it now also covers all FFV Tundras from 2009 - 2019. The new TSB is T-SB-0166-19.
So I hope this info helps, hit up your dealer if you are having enginestart-up problems with your FFVengine Tundras, and pass the word around!
If I had known about these engine issues, I would have NEVER bought a FFV engine!!!

 

Oh yeah - the engine fix for this TSB is only good for vehicles under 96 months or 80,000 miles. So get in to the dealer ASAP if you need to.

 

Does anyone have a copy of this TSB? The link in the thread does not work. I have been having this issue with my 2015 Tundra and went to the dealership. I mentioned the TSB but they told me that they were not aware of it and it would cost $1,361. They said that the fuel pump needed to be replaced and it needed to be reprogrammed.

Hopefully it will help someone as much as this thread helped me. I was going nuts trying to figure this issue out. This thread was the exact info I needed. I just took my 2014 Tundra in 2 days ago to have this done. As expected the Service Manager was dismissive as I described the problem and then handed her a print-out of the TSB (all 12 pages)....but I get it...they get 50 people a week telling them how to do their jobs. I was expecting to get the run around. But 4 hours later, they gave me a call telling me that they validated the issue (ethanol content was reading 80+ %) and that they performed the TSB service (ECM flash + new fuel pump). it cost me exactly $0.00.

I was thrilled to walk out into the garage this morning and have it fire right up with zero stumble or hesitation (the things we take for granted with our Toyota's LOL).

 

I’m having this issue with the used 2015 Tundra I just bought a month ago with 128k miles. Has anyone paid a dealer to reset the ecm after the 80k miles? If so, how much money are we talking about?

Hey guys, 2015 at 121,000 miles had cold start issues after battery replacement. I've been reading this thread and come to the conclusion I'm in need of update. But dealer is requesting pump change. Question is why is it a pump problem when everything works fine except initial start up. Are they just trying to shake money out of me? 1400 dollars to change pump and update ecm doesn't make any sense. I feel like a update alone would fix this...

Hi guys,
How do you know if this update has been done? I bought a used truck and don't know the previous history. I believe in the TSB it says that a sticker should applied in a specific spot under the hood indicating an update. For those that got the update, did you get that new sticker?

 

Just took my '15 in for the same. They already did it once before based on the TSB. The first time I brought it in was for the check engine light stemmed from the fuel pump. They fixed it that time for free. This time I brought it in for the hard cold start and brought this TSB to their attention. it cost me $150 for diagnostics (re-flash/ECU update) and I am back to good. One thing I did learn this time was that the Tech mentioned the majority of the time the ECU gets screwed up (reading 70%+ alcohol) for no legit reason, is when owners leave the truck running or key forward while pumping gas.

 

Is there an abbreviation for the fuel density I should be looking for on the code reader?

I'm assuming you're looking at live data while the engine is running. And I know it doesn't say alcohol density, what would it say if it was abbreviated?

Also my truck has 87,000 mi on it, and if I did take it into the dealer what would they charge me a couple hundred dollars?

 

So I just got my tundra back yesterday for this very issue, after it sitting at the dealership since January 10th. Apparently the fuel pump for flex fuels were out nationwide. If I had known prior to purchase about this TSB/Bulletin on the flex fuels tundras I’d of avoided a FF all together.

Truck no longer has the cold start hesitation but how long before this all happens again…? I’m not going to be putting non ethanol fuel in as that costs closely as much as diesel fuel. My truck truck has 57k on it so I’m glad it happened before the 80k emissions warranty.

 

My truck started doing exactly this behavior recently.

I put a new battery in it this past weekend thinking that was my issue but when it didn't go away these past few days I was wondering if I had gotten bad gas? While driving on the interstate yesterday and the day before to a volunteer function that was a little over an hour away. Being retired I don't drive it daily anymore so its the first time in a long time that I've driven that long in a single stretch. I noticed that when trying to pass the left lane parker(s)... shall I say... when I tried to pass with a rather aggressive command of the accelerator the engine got louder but I was slow to gain speed until after a bit of a wait the transmission would finally kick down a gear.

So last night I am googling "hard start/sluggish starting first start up of the day" + "slow shifting to passing gear" and eventually I found this thread.

So with all that said. I plugged in my OBD scanner and after some digging around I found how to see what my Fuel Alcohol % is, its 85.1%. I do not believe that I have purchased e85, but with the result of 85.1% that seems to "specific" for the fuel in my tank right now to NOT be e85 right?

I am going to go fuel up with super unleaded this evening and monitor the app and track/log the fuel alcohol percentage. But if it doesn't change after the fill up I guess I need to go and get re-flashed like others in this thread?

2015 5.7 with 97,1xx miles on it. I've owned it since new.

What say y'all should I be looking at anything else?

 

I filled up this afternoon and put in Super Unleaded. I made sure that the keys were out of the ignition and that I waited for the beeps to stop before cranking. I sat at the gas station at idle for a few min and then drove off conservatively until the "Alcohol Learning" went from a 1 to a 0. 8~10 min maybe??

rather anticlimactic update.

I am looking for an OBDII app tonight that will let me reset the alcohol setting. I have a bidirectional capable blue tooth dongle for the OBDII port. Just need to find an app that will let me hit reset. Are any of you using an Android or iOS app that can do this?
