. Not to belabor this topic but I wasn't able to continue this conversation yesterday so I'll add this in closing.

The main point I was trying to make was that if you're so inclined to give a harsh critique you should be able to take one. My view was that your opinion, even with all the preface you gave coming in was arrogant. You can argue 6 ways to the moon and back about how you were justified in it because you had no clue other ranges had rules that are expected to be followed but that doesn't change anything in the way I perceived your initial reaction to someone calling someone else out on a shooting range about a rule not being followed. Your continued justification of this fact only supported the belief in my mind. I was trying to incite some self reflection in how I perceived your choice of words. Instead of self reflection you gave me a varied number of reasons about how being a critical thinker and everything else in between justified being able to not follow rules on a shooting range. You claim to be a rule follower yet have opinions about how one could remove the bolt, how one could have their pistol dissembled... that wasn't the rule and neither example are justified as an excuse to not rack a weapon on a cold range if that is the rule that is expected. In the end, it is my opinion that you gave a half ass attempt of saying because of your flawed understanding it therefore negates your initial critique. Your critique doesn't go away just because you've now been schooled by a number of other people who chimed in that indeed rules are in place for safety. And yes other ranges operate with expectation's, not critical thinking interpretations.

when someone, a friend, a family member, and yes even a stranger on the internet, calls me out for a behavior I didn't believe I was exhibiting I try and take the time to ask myself why was I being perceived this way? The mark of an educated critical thinker listens instead of justifies.

To clarify what I meant in the dancing around the topic sentence was just this. That you were still justifying your initial response as not arrogant and it was because of all of the myriad of reasons you used to justify it.

No worries. Life takes priority over the interwebs for sure!

I've absolutely been reflecting on the responses and what I have learned and will be applying it in future takes.

I think we into semantics here, as I was explaining my ignorance on the other items caused me to have a take because I didn't understand the stance in the post. Actually googled the definition of arrogant to see if it fits. I see it. I don't find myself to be particularly important or have a great faith in my abilities to the point that I would call it exaggerated, but I did shoot from the hip (hah, punny) rather than asking questions to get clarification and understand it better. I assumed that things worked the same everywhere and that I had all the info, so that would be arrogant due to ignorance. My bad.

The good news is that I can take this and learn from it and work to be better for it.

I wasn't saying my critique was negated in the sense that it goes away. I said it nullifies/negates my critique meaning that may POV/argument/whatever was defeated, not that it went away or that I was blameless for being an ass. I fully own that I said it and got a mouth full of foot to chew on. If I truly thought it was wiped away I'd be deleting the post. I make mistakes and try to learn from them. If anyone else peruses it and reads through I hope they'll do the same.

Different ranges have different rules based on the RSO and range policy. Heck I have seen the same range have different rules depending on if it was open to the public that day or if it was a members only day.

Stuff changes. You used to be able to walk into many ranges, show ID and rent a gun and buy ammo to try out that gun. Then a bunch of people ended up committing suicide with rented guns so many places refused to rent guns to people there solo or who did not bring a gun of their own with them to start.

There was a woman in San Jose or Milpitas in California who went in with her child and rented a gun and killed the child and then herself. Just goes to show that how people behave has a direct impact on how rules are made and enforced in various places.

Agree/disagree or whatever, I thought the entire conversation was a good one.

Oof. That's awful. I never heard of the suicides at ranges. Pretty effed up. As if suicide isn't an effed up thing already, but damn. I can't imagine doing that to people.

Legitimately, the thought of other people having to clean up the mess has saved my life in the past. Apparently at that time my brain was ok with checking out, but not ok with being rude to first responders.

It's sad and it's tragic on many levels but you would be surprised at how common it is. Same thing with people jumping off of the Golden Gate bridge in SF. It happens more than people know and goes unreported to not put the idea in people's heads. I had a buddy who was Coast Guard and worked the bay. They often recovered bodies from suicides.

The bridge I get, and honestly it seems less horrible than at a gun range. That opinion comes from somebody who has never fished a body out of the water, so take it with a big ol' pile of salt. It just seems less horrific than using a firearm at a range.

I mean, since we are sharing suicide stories tonight, my local pawn shop had someone come in and ask to look at a 12 gauge shotgun, when the employee handed the gun to him he pulled a single shotgun shell out of his pocket, put it in, and and killed himself with it.

See, like that. Terrible thing to do to somebody. If you're checking out, buy the gun and go do it in the woods or something. Not right in front of some pawn shop clerk.

Just basic PC...I bet you didnt get a cite for it though? Just PC to stop and see who's inside and run the name for wants/warrants or if they are possibly DUI/DUId, or doing anything they shouldn't be. If all is well, then most times they are sent on their way

If someone wants to off themselves - cool. What isn't cool is when they take innocents with them and having our first responders do stuff out of their job description that will forever be engraved in their brains.

Water recovery is bad too. Usually been in the water a few days for them to pop to surface. Bloated and soft.

We had a fatal accident in my city last week. I was receiving the notes on the call as they came in via contacts.

Original call was a three vehicle accident, with one vehicle fully engulfed.
Updated to truck ran red light hit vehicle
Updated to Officers on scene. Full fire confirmed.
Officers performing CPR on passenger of burning veh
    Four fatalities
Drive of other veh was transported emerg with life threatening injuries

Fast forward the next day or so

....Veh was observed at a high rate of speed passing vehicles in the opposing lane of traffic. Driver was so aggressive, he fish-tailed once while passing a vehicle. He then slammed into the back of a SUV who was stopped, at a red light. The suv then caught fire immediately.
Driver who hit the car, was still in the hospital, intubated.

    Fast forward some more....

Reading reports; officers arrived on scene and performed duties as needed. Life saving rescuing attempts first. An adult male had approached an officer at the scene, advising he received a text notification via (insert app) that there was a vehicle accident. He gave the officer their names and veh description. Officer confirmed it was said vehicle/persons. He, and mult other family members were then transported to PD to meet with VA's (victim advocates)

Officers meet with driver who hit the veh family. They advised he had made suicide attempts prior to this day.

Below is some snip-its ive shared with others so I do not have to re-type it all

4 counts of vehicular homicide-reckless driving

    Victims
    49 yo male
    10 yo female
    16 yo female
    49 yo female

    Suspect 27 yo male

    One of the supplements reports

Officer arrived on scene one veh still on fire. Parties already confirmed deceased

Came in contact with a party on the curb who advised he believed his family was involved in the accident. They were in a ford explorer. He got a crash notification sent to his phone when it happened because they all share that feature. Cops cleared the plate and confirmed it was his family. It was his mom, dad and 2 little sisters. Ofc stayed with him till his other brother could come to scene then transported them and more family to the pd

She went to the hospital where suspect was in critical condition unk prognosis. There was also another veh victim there (so it was 3 cars total).

Other veh victims stated he was in the #2 turn lane to go NB on Washington st from EB Thornton Pkwy when he was struck on the passenger side. He then heard a loud noise and saw the other vehicles on fire. Him and another person cut suspects seatbelt and got him out of veh. He didn’t know where the explorer came from but believe Subaru suspect was driving ran a red light. He thinks suspect veh was traveling NB from Washington on a red light.

While waiting at hospital ofc was advised by attending docs there was no alcohol in their own lab reports, but had not done a drug toxicology for further testing.

We did not need to do a legal blood draw (we as in pd)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Another supplement from another ofc
When they arrived on scene suspect was out of vehicle on ground and not breathing. CPR started

Observed 4 occupants trapped inside fully engulfed car

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Another supp from another ofc

Witnesses told ofcs the explorer was NB on XX and was stopped, or slowing got the light at XX pkwy. Explorer was in the #3 NB lane when it was struck in a rear end by the WRX. Both vehicles went through the intersection and struck 3rd veh (Chrysler Pacifica).

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Supp from of yesterday

Ofc spoke to a witness who stated they were traveling NB on XX approaching XX. They passed the black Subaru. They stated the vehicle was driving aggressively and changed lanes from the NB lanes to oncoming SB lanes next to Taco Bell as it crossed XX Ave. They stated that car swerved so aggressively that it fish tailed and the tires were squealing. They watched it continue NB weaving in and out of traffic and driving in center median, and ran the red light at XX continuing NB

Ofc also went to check on suspect today. He will survive with multiple injuries requiring extensive surgeries

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update from a few days ago

He’s alive. Intubated and will need surgeries. But alive

officers went to the autopsies today. Based on injuries it’s likely the family did not suffer

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some parties in veh were decapitated

nurses don’t even want to take care of him.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

113.27mph with full accelerator at time of impact. No attempt to brake.

Possible suicide attempt. Planning on changing charges to homicide

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Murder 1: extreme indifference is what they wanna pursue

    no alcohol involved

.....................my point here is do not take out innocents. The two family members who were not in the vehicle (both adults) now have lost both parents, a brother, and a sister. This will forever change their lives, and the first responders lives who responded to this.
