Should there be rust here?

I was out looking for a light switch near my OBD port, as I am looking for a place to tap power for some cabin lighting I would like to add to my truck. While under the dash looking for it, I observed rust on the brake pedal assembly. I looked around more and found rust on metal under the drivers seat also. For a truck that is only 2 years old... I am shocked by this. Should I consider this normal?

    Thanks for your inputs,
    Mike

There are a few other posts about this, & yours looks good compared to a few I've seen. It just bare metal, so any moisture will start some surface rust. If you live in a damp or salty area especially.

Seems like poor quality control to me. Curious what others have to say.

Not normal... I live 500' off the ocean, and my '21 does not have any interior rust (at least that's visible). I wonder if the truck sat somewhere w/windows cracked or open for an extended time prior to being put into service!?!?

I saw something like this on my old 2010 Camry, the brake pedal assembly had some surface rust like this, I didn't worry about it then, if it really bothered me I'd just hit it with some fine sandpaper, some rust converter, and paint it flat black.

Having worked for a very large automotive interior supplier for 2 decades... this is common. Adding paint or coatings is a cost that OEMs typically choose to not pay for. The environmental testing (salt spray, etc) is often N/A for interior steel components that are not Class A surfaces... ie: Floor Console brackets, IP crossbeams, seat frames, etc.

I went through the same ordeal two decades ago when I bought my Tundra new. Rust was existing on the backside of the front bumper coming through the fog light openings.

Got rid of it pretty quickly but because it was an exterior item, I had to reapply it every 2/3 years.

Every Toyota I've torn down that far had rust like that. Looks like nothing has changed in 30 years.
