How much is too much

I recently got a pretty well used crewmax and I put my camper in it. The camper weighs approximately 1450 lbs loaded. I wasn't expecting it to squat so much. So my question is, is this too heavy. It's not on the bump stops but it's damn close.

 

Well, you are about 100 pounds over your payload rating...and you're not even packed for s trip.

This is just me, but I'd either get a much lighter camper, or s truck rwtedbfor your current campers weight.

 

Yes. That’s past max payload. You need a 3/4 or 1 ton truck to carry 1500 lbs of bed weight at all times. You can get airbags, which will help, but you’re walking a thin line of being top heavy and the weight causing frame issues.

 

Also, liability issues in an accident. If I was in an accident and the other truck was clearly past its rated capacities, I'd have a lawyer hired before I left the scene of the accident...lol.

On the opposite side of that scenario, I'm not going to risk any part of my net worth by overloading a truck.

 

...or rear wheel bearing issues, they take all of the vertical load.

I'm not going to be a payload nancy, but you put a truck camper in a crewmax? Is it built for a 5.5ft bed?

I was hoping to work with what I had, max GVWR is 7k, I haven't had it on a scale yet but I'm sure it's real close if not over.

 

With 202000 miles and a couple minor wrecks I don't expect it to last much longer anyway, but Toyota so I could be surprised.

I sincerely hope so it was my dad's, he recently passed away and this and some fond memories are all that is left.

 

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new setup.

As others have said, you are over payload. There are things you can do to make the truck ride better and be more level, but you will be really pushing your trucks stopping power and components like bearings. There is that picture of the Ram truck that broke at the frame due to being overweight with one of these. I doubt that will happen, but you do not want to be a meme in that regards.

Would lightening the truck make it more capable of carrying the weight? Is 7k just 7k no matter where on the truck it's balanced?
I could lose a couple hundred lbs of seats and stuff in the cab without missing it

 

Just my 2 cents.
If you have fond memories don't run your over weight camper on it. Use it for many other truck things and continue the memories with your current family if you have one.

It can slide in another 4 inches or so, the truck is just there for emotion support at the moment. Lol

 

My father passed a couple of years ago and I acquired his 97 Ranger. I get the draw, just be careful.

Yes, it is Gross vehicle weight and payload. two different things, but related. you could remove seats, spare tire, liners and misc other things to reduce the gvw and get to a safer weight value. that, combined with things like RAL or bags would also help.

payload would still be a factor, especially once you put things back in the truck/camper such as water and clothing.

I mimic the other advise and say use the truck for truck things, not for the camper.

Here's a thought. Sell the camper and get something more appropriate for your dad's rig. The tundra has the family connection, does your camper?

 

No, but it's home for now so I'm kinda stuck making due. I guess the best option is going to be a ram 3500, but man I really don't want to buy a truck. Lol

 

If anyone is curious the pallets are to keep it off the rails. These beds are DEEP. I plan on building a platform for it to rest on that will get it a bit lower.

 

Can y'all help me make sense of this? Truck weighs about 5700 loaded with my ass and my gear. Wouldn't that give me 1300 lbs of payload? I don't understand why decreasing curb weight doesn't increase capacity.

 

This reminds me of a similar situation with an unusual solution. A Tundra pulling a flatbed trailer with a slide in camper bolted to the trailer. I wasn't able to get a picture but it was a pretty good idea. The spaces on the trailer not covered by the base of the camper were filled with diamond plate aluminum boxes for storage. I'm sure my wife would have given me the stank eye if I rigged something up like that but it did work and the Tundra wasn't anywhere near overweight.
