He just got back to me. Sorry so long I just forgot.
“If you run the wrong oil in a clutched limited slip differential, you will damage the clutches. This would cause a gumming up of the diff with clutch material.”
I just am not sure you actually have a limited slip in there or not. It looks like it might but I didn’t think they came with real limited slips.
All tundras should run synthetic 75w90 or 80w90 GL5 gear oil. If you have a clutched LSD then you would require LSD oil in same viscosities. If it is just an ALSD (automatic brake applying) then you would not need the LSD oil. There is very little difference in cost of LSD and non LSD oil. I would consult owners manual as to what to put it.
I think possibly someone poured regular gear oil in there. Mixing that with synthetic would cause a breakdown of both. Make a mess. I’m thinking that’s what happened. We were just going back and forth on it.
When you refilled it you put in proper full synthetic gear oil? I’d run that for a couple thousand then drain it out sort of as a flush and refill. See what comes out of it then. Also put your hand on the diff after driving it. Feel the temp. Do it a couple of times. If you don’t feel it getting hot, and the drained oil is better I think you’re okay.

I’ve got my own surprise. I’m about to drain everything from my 2010 with 325000 kms. And I’m willing to bet the fluids have never been touched except for engine oil. About to is in late November when I get home from work.

No worries on the time, we all have lives I totally get it; work has been nuts for me. That's the problem with buying used - you never know what the previous owner did. The first fluid I changed it out with was the 75M-90NS, not sure if the No Slip additive added to the gumming? After 1600 miles, I put the GL-5 75w-85 (RedLine) in, drained it, had less gunk but still some shiny bits, and changed it out again. I've been driving it around and trying to take turns to see if there's any slip, so far nothing to report. Hoping your fluid change goes better than mine did - never know if people maintain like we do and do it the right way. Let me know how yours turns out!
Thanks for the manual information too btw. I feel better using the right stuff, just hoping I didn't wreck my rear diff. Now I have a weird noise that comes when I go more than 60mph, like a bearing noise (even though I changed out the CV axles, wheel bearings, needle bearing, etc.) I hooked up my Steelman Chassis-Ear and boy does it not sound great. Might bite the bullet and try to have someone around here take a look; problem is, not many good mechanics around me which is why I do everything myself.

Ya know what they say, what's good for the goose is good for the gander? That felt corny writing it lol. It's odd because the goose honking eventually goes away, and it doesn't sound like it's in the area of the SAIs - I just haven't had a chance to check them out. It sounds almost like in the area of the water pump that I replaced earlier, and I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence but when I open the oil fill plug the noise seems to go away? Idk, I definitely need to investigate more.

No idea what a bearing noise might be. If you have done all that other stuff, I'd just look for rubbing or
or something shiny? Otherwise drive and enjoy it. My buddy who advised will probably help me out. He's a pro
journeyman HD mechanic. So he does in an hour what takes you and me all day! I think I'll post up a thread
and pics as we go along. It will be lowering kit, airbags, brakes all around, then fluids all around, spark plugs.

That's a great buddy to have! Wish I lived closer so I could have him take a look and fix it in 30 min! Definitely post up a thread with pics as you go, you know I'll be following along! I'll also let you know if I can figure out this noise, not sure at all what it is - just hope my front diff isn't going, who knows what abuse it went through with the other owner.
