Silencershop.com used to have some blogs post that walk you through the process and go in depth. Capitolarmory.com is really awesome too, they can ship suppressors directly to your door if you live in a state that operate in. My last surefire can came directly to my door after approval which was nice. A lot of dealers are happy to walk you through the process as well. Bonus is if you find a shop that’s a range and they will usually let you use it while you wait. Might be worth a day of just going from shop to shop seeing who are fudds and who are legit to find someone to assist. National gun trust is awesome if you decide to go the trust route. And one last resource you could check out is r/NFA on Reddit and search. There is a good amount of knowledge over there.

I will say this as a word of caution. Once you buy one and use it, you will want to buy one for every gun. Not a bad thing but it gets expensive real quick!

I plan to have them for any that are threaded for them. Currently that's just two, but the plan is definitely to have more. As for shops.... I'm in the middle of nowhere. Gun shops don't exist here. You just get stuff shipped to a local FFL, or you go to the chain stores like sportsmans warehouse, scheels, or the ranch stores like Murdoch's for your gun stuff. All of those are travel time for me and few are located with eachother, so it's not a super feasible option to tour shops.

Thank you for the websites to start digging through, though.

Definitely check out Capitol armory, they are located in Texas but have FFL/SOTs for almost every state. Having them shipped directly to your door after approval is a game changer. The shop I use is about 2 hours away one way so if Capitol Armory has something I want I usually just buy from them. Never had a bad experience!

I was going to buy from Capitol through their Guardian program but they're literally out of everything until next year.

Dealer must have an NFA license, which is more than a standard FFL... Not all FFLs are licensed for NFA items.

Right, I'm just saying what is around as far as gun shops. For an actual NFA dealer I would bet I'm in the 2 hour one way range, but that would also be out of state. Don't know how much that helps me. For in state it might be even further.

Closest with a kiosk is actually close to a buddy that I visit from time to time. Reading up on their site now. Thank you for the guidance.

The kiosk is cool, but not required. You can do everything except the fingerprints right on silencershop's website, and they'll send you a fingerprint card for you to get filled out and send back. Then all you need is a class 3 ffl to have the can shipped to. And they store your prints so you only have to do the card the 1st time. The one i just got (my 2nd one) was only slightly more complicated than buying something on Amazon.

I really liked the kiosk idea just so somebody could hold my hand through the process the first time. Definitely not required but it's nice to know when you walk in the door that you can usually, not always find somebody to walk you through it.

I've been hearing that a lot. I may give them a shot for my next suppressor.

If the dealer sells suppressors, doesn't that mean he's licensed for NFA?

Definitely makes it easier. Especially being able to do the fingerprints right there, in 30 seconds.

Yes. To sell silencers, SBR, full auto, etc they need a Class 3 SOT license.

Yes, I was referencing someone's comment about having one transferred to a local FFL and was just saying that not all FFLs can handle NFA transfers...

but I think I misunderstood what the person was getting at :anonymous:

I'm going to sound like an old fart right now, but I remember my first can taking a year for approval back in 2016. I'm happy folks are able to get their form 4's approved so quickly these days.

For anyone looking to get into suppressors I would recommend a .22LR can. Just make sure it user serviceable as .22LR will foul up cans and you want to be able to take it apart and clean the baffles. Get something with stainless steel baffles so you can use a stainless steel tumbler to clean them.

You will have the most fun with suppressed .22LR, the cans themselves are cheaper, depending on barrel length you won't need specialized subsonic ammo and it is the closest you will get to Hollywood quiet.

If you want to suppress centerfire pistol and rifle, the conventional wisdom has been start with a .45 cal pistol can and .30 cal rifle can. That combo will go a good job of covering the majority of general use. Once you get your feet wet, hop into more caliber specific specialized cans as you branch out or just enjoy what you have.

Also when looking at prices, remember to add an additional $200 for the cost of the Federal Tax Stamp. You will need 2 sets of fingerprints and passport photo's also. E-File will let you use an electronic passport photo but you will still need to send in 2 sets of fingerprints.

Does the fingerprint thing apply if we submitted fingerprints when registering for our teaching cert?

As a Canadian and one who likes going to indoor ranges when the weather is particularly Canadian, like from November to April lol, this thread is making me so green with jealousy, like Green Giant with seasickness green. I would love to put a can on anything I take to the range. Man that would make for such better experience. Especially when the guy in the next lane has some super aggressive muzzle brake and is rattling your guts out.

I started my NFA journey back in 2011 and I remember at that point examiners were assigned by state and some were way faster than others. I have a suppressor that I submitted in 2012 and didn’t get approval till 2014, it was something like 15 months of a wait. It was definitely a worse process back then. I’m happy to see they are improving it and trying to make it faster even with the crappy eforms system they created hahah

I have purchased 5 suppressors and have 3 form 1 sbr's. I had to submit 2 sets of prints for each Form 4/Form 1 I submitted. I have only purchased NFA stuff 1 item at a time so I'm not sure if for example, if you submitted multiple form 4's if 2 sets of prints would be enough for lets say 3 suppressors purchased at the same time. While the fingerprinting was inconvenient there was usually a livescan place within a reasonable distance that could do it for a fair price.

For the teaching cert, there was only 1 entity we could use to get it done - I wanna say e-file was the processor it had to go through. It sounds like the feds will let us use more than one?

ATF doesn't save your prints and they won't apply one fingerprint card to multiple appications, and every Form 4 or Form 1 requires prints. BUT, if you use a service like silencershop or capital armory, they save your prints and will add them to every application so you don't have to get re-printed every time.

Unless something has changed, you just need to submit 2 sets of prints. It doesn't matter where you get printed. I always used livescan because it was convenient but I had friends who went to the local PD and had their prints done there for a small fee. I know some folks even do it themselves. They get the cards and ink and print themselves. For me, I would rather spend the $20 and get good livescan prints instead of risking the ATF asking for another set of prints because the first 2 were not good enough bogging down the whole approval process by who knows how long.

Livescan is legit...I have their equipment and use it daily to print folks for NFA stuff

We save the eft file for each customer and can provide copies for pretty much any reason you may need your prints for

The federal govt is going to require new copies for each and every application...you just don't have to get rolled each time if you use a shop that does electronic scans and keeps them on file

Yes... You'll need to submit fingerprints w/each NFA purchase. The exception to this is one benefit of Silencershop platform. Once you do the fingerprints w/one of their kiosks, you don't have to do them ever again if you purchase through Silencershop; you would need to re-do them on subsequent purchases through other vendors.

Referencing the required photo for the tax stamp, that needs to have been taken and submitted w/in one year of purchase, but if your purchase is through Silencershop you can just take a new photo each year w/your phone and update it through through the app or online...

You can also send them a paper fingerprint card and they'll digitize it and store it for next time, if there's no kiosk around

Any FFL that captures electronic fingerprints should be able to store the eft file for any future purchases...if they're not they are making life harder on everyone
