My '97 Tacoma was was just recently totaled by the insurance company, not my doing. I've been wanting a Tundra for awhile. I wanted a first gen, because I liked how they looked and didn't need the towing capacity of anything newer. Now, the 2007+ models are growing on me and I realized the 5.7L gets about the same fuel mileage if not better, so there's no need to get a first gen

Over a week ago, I test drove a 2013 5.7 4x4 Double Cab, SR5 which I really liked. After I test drove it, I read that Toyota detuned the throttle response in the 2014s, because people complained it was too touchy. When I test drove it, I did chirp the rear tire at first, pulling out into traffic at an intersection from the dealer. I thought it was because it's a newer truck and I wasn't use to a 5.7. So I became mindful of the throttle. I drove it around for a couple of miles and didn't chirp the tire at all, after. I've, also, read that people weren't too happy with how much Toyota detuned the throttle in the 2014s and some said it felt unsafe when trying to pull out into traffic or passing someone on the highway. Anybody feel the pre 2014 is too touchy?
A week later, I test drove a 2015 2WD Double Cab TRD with the 5.7 with about the same amount of miles. I did notice that the throttle response wasn't the same and there was about a 1 - 2 second delay when I went to pass someone on the freeway. It wasn't as quick from a dead stop, either. I did prefer the instant response on the 2013 over the 2015.

Between 2007 - 2013, which years Tundras are good to get and are there any years to stay away from.

I read that all 5.7L came standard with the towing package, is that true? I do plan on getting a travel trailer.

I also read that people prefer the seats on the 2013 and older models why is that?

Is a Tundra with around 200,000 miles or more, ok to buy?

I did prefer the 2013 body style, interior and throttle response of the 2013 over the 2015. The 2013 felt more like a truck to me compared to the 2015. 2013 and older 4WDs are a lot harder to find compared to 2014 and up around me. I know they are both great trucks and I'll be happy with either.

I would just buy the one you like better. Buying anything with 200k miles has its risks. Toyota or not, it depends on how well it was taken care of and unless you knew all the owners there is no way to tell what was done to them as far as maintenance. You are comparing 2 trucks with high mileage so they might perform different depending on how they were taken care of.

Register at the Toyota owners site. Plug vin in and look at the service history. At 200,000 miles you are buying service history.

My opinion. I like the 2012-2013 models. Kinks were mostly worked out by then.the seats hold you better than the new ones. And I like my throttle response in the 2012 I own. Tow/haul button is fun to engage too. Tow package should give you the 4:10 gears. I believe.

I love my 2010 5.7 4x4. I found it 2 months ago with 110,000 miles, original owner, and he had all services done at the same dealer. Good luck with the search!

Good luck with your search. There are solutions if the one you find is either too touchy or too lethargic. As has been stated, at 200k miles, it's all about the maintenance that was done, and what records there are.

Grab a newer one, swap in 5.29 gears, and add a Harrop supercharger. You will have a :rocket:, less miles, and more smiles.
