I asked this question in the suspension section but maybe I’ll get a better response here.

Does anyone have any experience driving both the OR and sport that could tell me if it’s a significant difference for a daily driver on junk city roads?
My sport suspension isn’t great and I’m not looking for any lift, just a softer ride.
I’m assuming I can probably find some cheap OR suspension if it’s worth the change.
    Thanks!

It really comes down to what you are wanting.

Preface: I only have experience with the 2.5 gen

I went from the stock shocks to the TRD Sport and now on 6112 front 5100 rear.

I really liked how the truck rode with the TRD Sport shocks, it was stiff but controlled and the truck felt planted. But, you did feel the bumps and dips in the road.

With the 6112/5100, I'm not as stiff but I roll a lot less than with the stock shocks. The wife is much happier with this set up and the 6112.

I've heard the OR shocks are pretty similar to the 6112 (hence why I talked about my experience) and if you are finding your current Sport shocks to be too stiff, I would think the OR would be a good change if you can find some at a reasonable price.

It might be easier to move from a 20" sport wheel down to an 18" wheel. The added sidewall should soften up the bumps a bit. Tires might be cheaper, too.

thanks for the input! I was just hoping the difference between the OR and the sport was enough to make the swap to give a less stiff ride. Unfortunately the northern city I live in has pretty bad roads year round and I can really feel every bump with the sport suspension. If I can grab some take-offs cheap it would be a simple swap and very inexpensive compared to going with an aftermarket coilover.

I never thought about that, maybe something to consider in the future, this is the first time I’ve actually liked the wheels I’ve got with a Toyota though, I’m trying the amp terrain pros instead of the duratracs this time and they were only $1300 cdn installed so not too bad as far as cost.

I think you’re confusing the TRD OffRoad shocks with the TRD Pro, by comparing the OR to 6112s. The Sport and OR shocks are the same shock, just “valved” a little different to give the sport a tighter road feel. 6112s would be a closer comparison to the Pro shocks, but still not apples to apples. 6112s to OR shocks are apples to broccoli. 6112s to Pro are apples to oranges.

I meant what I said. 6112 are beefier then the OR shocks but should be along the same line. The Pro shocks are completely different and have a very different ride characteristic then the 6112. The Pro shocks are much softer on road from what I've heard while the OR and the 6112 are a bit stiffer but not as stiff as the Sport shocks.

Do you guys think it’s worth the hassle if I can pick up some cheap take-offs or are the two too close in ride quality?
Otherwise I’m looking at 2-3k for a nice pair of coilovers and rear shocks, which seems like overkill since I’m not really looking for lift.

See if you can do the take-offs at a reasonable price. An afternoon doing the the fronts, better yet if you get them as an assembly, and maybe an hour to do the rears.

I think finding some take-offs fairly cheap won’t be too difficult, it’s the hassle of doing it and not having a noticeable improvement that has me questioning it.

The SR and OR shocks will be softer than the Sport, yes. Significantly, no.

Do it. I dont think you'll be disappointed. I just swapped my front only and noticed a pretty decent difference. . And I only did it to get the front end up but glad I did.

That’s great to hear, thank you.
Can you notice the difference between the front and back at all with only doing the front? The roads up here a bad with cracks/potholes etc.

I’ve never driven the ‘24 Tundra variants but in all of our generations of Tacomas, 4Runners, and older Tundras I’ve found the basic SR shocks to be even softer and better for a DD than the OR shocks. I would assume it’s the same for the new Tundra. If you want the best ride and the least money spent find someone giving away or close to it their SR shocks.

Not really. . I'm sure it would probably be better doing front and rear but like I said. . I mainly did it just to get the front back up. Better ride was just a bonus!

I have the older gen. But if the newer gen sport comes stock with a red trd front sway bar may try swapping that out for the black off-road sway bar. It made a big difference in comfort over rough roadways on my 21 sport

I went from the standard Platinum suspension to doing all but the rear springs TRD Sport suspension plus sway bars on my '18. It definitely made the ride rougher. But I do 0 off roading and thought that would be better for highway cruising. If I hold on to my '18 long enough where I have to do struts/shocks, I'll go back to stock or the TRD Off-Road to have a little smoother ride.

did you have to do an alignment after the swap?
You have a pic of how much it lifted? I’m assuming only .5-1”?

I'm honestly not sure about the amount of lift because I also did cornfed spacers. I went with the 1" kit and wanted to gain a little rake back so I replaced those with the 1/2" kit when I got tired. I did do an alignment both times. I do have pics of that. I'll post them up in a few.

Ended up doing this, got almost new TRD off-road suspension for $400 cdn, full fronts and back shocks, couple hours in the driveway and done, the ride is exactly what I was looking for, much smoother, definitely less harsh than the stiff sport suspension. Also gained a full inch up front.
