While flushing my cooling system, I realized how loud it had gotten when in front of the truck. You can't hear this from the truck cab.

Doesn't exactly sound like valves tapping. Loud industrial sewing machine perhaps. It's probably wishful thinking that it was the water pump bearings since it's about to be replaced

    LOL

OK, I guess I'm relieved since these trucks are prone to that and the cost is near outrageous to put shims as they recommend

How many miles do you have on yours?

I was at 77,777 earlier this week. I'm sitting just shy of 78k as of Friday. Top-end is clean as a whistle at the moment, but was varnished up a bit when I got it, before I started doing treatments.

I haven't looked closely at the belt setup on these trucks yet, but when the front of my Tacoma got raspy and eventually grumbly and bad enough to turn heads when I'd first start the truck in cold weather, it was a idler pulley bearing. It's always really hard to get a read on noises through a camera microphone. But it kind of sounds like an unhappy bearing to me. Luckily on the Tacoma it was a sub-$100 part, accessible with no more than dropping the skid plate, loosening a bolt.

I thought their recommendation was to go through and measure the clearance for each valve and then order the appropriate size shim to bring it back within tolerance. So you have to open it up do all the measuring then put it back together, then order the shims then open it back up again

so cost prohibitive no one does it

At least that's what I understood

Is the idler pulley not something recommended during the timing belt change?

edit: yes, I believe all that is in my kit. I do remember there being a lot of chatter on some of my other vehicles in years gone by when those bearings went bad so hopefully that is at least part of it and will be resolved in the next two weeks when I replaced the timing belt

I have no doubt a good bit of it is valves. I can hear that part when I'm outside the truck between the back of the engine and the drivers door. I may try one of the proven additives that is known to help with that in older vehicles

Just updating this in case someone runs across it in the future

Yes, some was typical valve chatter. But it turned out most of my chatter was due to various pulleys and a loose fan with
1 of 4 studs broken off and another nut right next to it loose/backed off about 10 turns.

Most was resolved when I replaced the timing belt per the TB sticky thread

    After:

After with the hood open since that was how I did the original video. However, there is a lot of wind noise:

Such a noticeable difference. Mine sounds like your 1st video. I’ll hit 80k miles in the next couple hundo.
