4 months into ownership . Lost the key on my bike ride on the trail . What saved my ass was my Apple Watch and being able to unlock the car at least . Was able to get my phone and look up shit. Dealer was also 2 miles . So I biked there , they told me to call Toyota and get some kind o case number . I bitched at Toyota and they some how rushed everything . I got a tow in 45 minutes and they had my case open and contacted the dealer to take care of everything . Still doesn’t it make it right because of their shitty one key.

I’m also still getting the second replacement key .

i always wondered, if the real reason of them holding onto us hostage on the 2nd key is to force us to go back to the dealership and maintain that relationship for service considering where I am at, dealers are making less now cause there is less inventory for them to sell so Toyota is giving them a carrot and saying we'll help your revenue stream by forcing the customer back to your dealership to get the 2nd key done. Just a thought...

Not Toyota fault you lost it biking. Don’t take the key biking! Leave the fob and lock it with your watch. Unlock it when you return and know the key is right where you left it safely inside the vehicle.

Why is it so hard to make more keys? I don’t understand the delay from Toyota.

It is Toyota’s fault he didn’t receive a 2nd key fob when he bought the truck. Completely 100% Toyota’s fault.

After paying the high cost to replace the pricey smart key on my wife's Honda, I now have airtags on all my keys. It's defiantly worth the $20.

I'll call toyota next week and bitch about this. If I know that I'll only get 1 key and the 2nd key might be here 6-12 months later I will NOT buy the truck.

I'm fairly certain you cannot lock the key inside the vehicle.

Got my second key right away after buying my Platinum. I was really pissed that the dealer said nothing to me about providing only one key until after I handed them a cashier's check for the truck. I complained to Toyota Customer Service and they authorized a second key.

Months later, I took my truck in for the 10k service and the service advisor told me I was due for a second key. I told him I didn't want it, since Toyota already gave me a second key fob months earlier. He insisted and when I picked my truck up, there was a key fob in the cupholder. Now I have 3 key fobs. Morons.

With the cost of a spare key I'm not sure why you'd turn down a free third key, not sure Toyota is the moron in this case.
    Sorry, couldn't resist, only joking.

So here's what I'd like to know...
If you happen to find the lost key will it still work or does Toyota disable it somehow?

Cause I'm not a low life and don't take advantage of people or situations that I shouldn't. If I found your wallet, I'd return it to you. Your cash included.

I wasn't always like that, i admit. But I'm grateful for what i now have, retired at 53 years old, paid off 2 mil house and excellent health. I dont need to take advantage of people or situations and ruin my karma. Yes, I'm bragging a little.

Wow, people will attack others for almost nothing nowadays. I have a Tundra, it has issues, luckily not the engine yet. Y'all need to put down the Kool Aid for 2 seconds and realize Toyota ain't what it used to be. Guy went through something he shouldn't have because Toyota is failing its customers by only providing 1 fob on a vehicle. Vehicles that can be upwards of $80k+. That is unacceptable. Please tell me another manufacturer currently delivering new vehicles with only 1 fob? I'll wait.

The more you defend Toyota, the more they will continue to screw you and y'all end up looking like clowns. I for one am sorry the OP had to go through this since this was my main fear when I only received 1 fob. Luckily I didn't have that issue and finally got my 2nd fob after 7 months of waiting. Quit being jerks people, crap happens, doesn't mean he's an idiot because he lost a key fob. Geez.

Also when you run out of your free subscription to the app I’m pretty sure you can’t unlock your truck unless you renew. I do think it’s stupid for Toyota to ask you to pay for an app to unlock our trucks, see how much fuel is in the tank or just the mileage on it, with all this technology. They don’t mind sending you request to track the truck , last week, and its information so they can monitor it for maintenance? Once your trial ends you can't really do anything with the app accept maybe look for a recall?. Maybe I just don’t know how to use the app? My 2017 Ford Raptor still gave you all that information and was 6 years old when I traded it.

The reason can be traced back to 1983 when Clark Griswald bought the Wagon Queen Family Truckster.

Exactly. But even that is not 100% secure. Many years ago, I had a seat pack that had a loose zipper, and I was bombing some super rocky downhill on one of my local single-track loops. The zipper came open and spilled the contents, including my car keys, over a mile of trail. Luckily, I was able to backtrack and find all the important stuff. Took some time and luck for sure. But that pack was an exception, and I never had another issue like this with better packs. But these days I just put my keys and phone in Ziploc bags in my jersey pockets. Nothing can fall out of those.

Honestly if you call Toyota and bitch then you can get a second key done.
Question is what happens to the first key ?? Does it get disabled ?

You can also sit in your car and turn on the car with the phone while inside . Just don’t touch the steering , shifter or pedals or it shuts off. You can even adjust ac controls etccc.

the thing that got me paranoid was the watch didn’t want to work with the Toyota app and wanted me to open the app on the phone first . Well the phone was locked in the car lol . I guess because I was to close to the phone it didn’t want to work . So I moved far from the car and the watch unlocked it finally

Sucks, but even if you 'had' both, you'd still need to go home instead of closest dealer to get fob. And would have to go to dealer anyway to replace 'lost' fob unless now you're fine with one fob..O.0
